My Design Philosophy

My Passion is to bring out the beauty of life in design. I believe that design not only enhances the aesthetics of the public. The ultimate goal is to make life better. I think the beauty of simplicity and simplicity is often more advanced and more moving. We spend 87% of our lives in buildings, and design profoundly affects how we feel and act.

Inspiration from "iron atoms"

Taking inspiration from "iron atoms", the motion trajectory of atoms is infinitely continuous, and extracting and unfolding it. Its form is spacious and full of sportiness, which coincides with the spirit of continuous exploration and progress in the city. By converting volume and extracting form, streamline and wavy architectural language is adopted.

Element reconstruction: Intersect the extracted linear extensions.

Element reconstruction: Intersect the extracted linear extensions. Then transform the form into a three-dimensional space structure. Design techniques: Streamline design is more distinctive in architecture, more three-dimensional, creative and unique sense of art. It can enhance the flexibility and softness of buildings, enhance tension, and provide the most intuitive visual enjoyment.

Concept of 'continuity'

According to the design concept of 'continuity', the conveyed information gives people a sense of continuity and continuity. Arcs can soften sharp edges and corners, making the space softer, thereby changing the original overly square shape. Streamlines can extend the visual effect, improve the visual height and flexibility of the space.

The 'Continuation' of the entire site

The 'Continuation' of the entire site, through the renovation of the building and surrounding environment, improves the quality of the entire space and improves the environment of the community. The functions inside the carriage are restaurants, cafes, bars, libraries, exhibition halls, and overall extension space. The surrounding environment is a landscape activity area.

Final Design Scheme

Continuation

Create a new visual experience through flexible spatial forms. Emphasizing the communication, function, and form of the spatial environment, connecting the indoor and outdoor landscapes of the space, thereby enhancing the aesthetic feeling of the indoor environment, making the entire indoor space atmosphere unobstructed and visually transparent. At the same time, blurring the boundaries between spaces can also make spatial relationships closer and allow for more possibilities for spatial extension.

Final Design Proposal

Due to the limited area of the carriage and the high crowd flow in the community, the overall extended space includes semi-indoor and outdoor spaces. In order to be related to the functionality of the carriage, the semi-indoor expansion space is divided into an interactive activity area and a display area.

Design Narrative

"Continuation" is designed to promote the continuation of industrial civilisation and the memory of the sites preserved in the area, to demonstrate the resilience of the sites, and to experience the development of the sites by involving young people and having a more open and intuitive experience. The purpose of the temporary installation is to stimulate curiosity and engagement. The process of viewers seeing the space through a series of kaleidoscope-like interiors creates reflections of seemingly infinite fragments: the image of a shared space. Memories and stories of the site are told, as well as relationships with others and the surrounding environment, generating communication and reflection that leads to continuation. The shape of each kaleidoscope results in different three-dimensional forms of visualisation inside, with the reflections of the debris of the surrounding environment constantly changing to respond to the movement of the viewer as an active co-producer of the space. The reflection of glass shards blurs the boundaries of space, breaks the bonds of gravity, and even halts the pace of time. The inner viewer may feel curious, following a line, pursuing an infinitely extended world that draws one closer with curiosity and observation. Through the collision and fusion of light, shadow, and colour, the mirror brings people the experience of ultimate beauty and provokes thought.

Honours Project - Site Research and Representation

Part I: Research and Analysis

The abandoned train in Beijing is located next to Guangqu Road in Chaoyang District, Beijing. It was once a dedicated route for chemical warehouses in the eastern suburbs of Beijing but has now been abandoned. The entire space is irregularly shaped, with the site adjacent to Guangqu East Road, Fangjia Village community on the east side, a large number of enterprise companies on the south side, and a small amount of green landscape design on the west side. Due to the influence of surrounding high-rise buildings, the sight of the crowd is obstructed and cannot be attracted by the train. In the road network system, the main entrance of the site is adjacent to the main road, resulting in chaotic traffic. The shops around are single. The plant community in the area is relatively single, mostly poplar trees, and there are many weeds, gravels, garbage, etc., making the land in the site relatively bare. The living facilities of the population in the area are disorganized, and the spatial planning is chaotic, which also reflects the imperfect related facilities in the community. The entire site has a relatively flat terrain and is hot in summer, so it is necessary to consider plant shading in summer. In cold winter, it is necessary to consider insulation inside the carriage. At that time, the internal stability of the train was required, and the internal structure and appearance were well-preserved.

Part II: Site Representation

My object is rust. Like most people, I thought that rust could not exist. For example, rust was a major scourge of industrial development, and at first, it was difficult to accept such an aesthetic. But after being exposed to too many palettes, I found the unique character of this purely natural physical oxidation so fascinating. Each piece of patina has a unique shape, a reverence for past history and a reverence for nature. Using rust as an extension, rust enables people in the region to have a deeper understanding of this history and provides comfort for the "elderly" who have experienced it. It blends the old and new, forming a historical heritage. The unique mix of textures and colours of rust is unique to nature, giving the metal surface a magic that is closer to nature. It can also be applied to architectural spaces and is an area with sustainability. After material testing, rust stains merge with different materials and slowly penetrate, resulting in the formation of new objects. Finally, the rust is reused, allowing the rust to continue. In my project, I incorporated rust into the design to realize the idea of environmental protection and thus trigger people's attention. By bringing attention to the unnoticed "rust," people can feel the passage of time and the changes in human relationships. For example, it can be expressed through the reflection of a mirror.

Theoretical Underpinning

Part I: Generation Z and Self Identification

'For Generation Z, using the internet is as natural as breathing, and virtual worlds are an important part of their lives. ... They came together due to their interests and found like-minded friends, completely out of free choice and personal expression.'

Pursuing individuality and freedom

The new youth of Generation Z have shown their own distinct attitude. For Generation Z, using the internet is as natural as breathing, and virtual worlds are an important part of their lives. In their cognition, niche culture and traditional collective culture are not exactly the same. They came together due to their interests and found like-minded friends, completely out of free choice and personal expression. Because personalized expression has become a consensus, daring to speak up for love and also recognizing each other for love. Therefore, in my works, I can see each individual and also a group, integrating various sensory elements, with a novel and interesting appearance and rich and diverse forms. They have a profound imprint of the times and have never stopped expressing themselves: sharp edges and clear personalities.

Part II:  Pre-generation Z and Self Identification

'everything is possible and people are infinite. They pursue breaking free from the limitations of their life framework, striving to strip themselves, and breaking through all obstacles with an optimistic and upward attitude..'

Break free from constraints and persist in oneself

Most people in Generation X are confident, optimistic, persistent, frank, stubborn, and knowledgeable. The communication mode of this generation makes them less constrained by rules and regulations, and places more emphasis on communication from multiple perspectives, advocating for autonomy and independence. In their view, everything is possible and people are infinite. They pursue breaking free from the limitations of their life framework, striving to strip themselves, and breaking through all obstacles with an optimistic and upward attitude. Therefore, in my work, the main elements are the cube frame and sphere. The stacking of spheres is the main body, representing upward vitality. The stacking of cube frames constitutes an internal sphere, representing the difficulties and obstacles encountered in life, as well as the limitations of regulations and rules. But in the end, tenacious vitality will eventually overcome all obstacles. Emphasize that Generation X adheres to its independent philosophy and is not constrained.

Part III: Generations and Community

'Each generation is interested in expressing their individuality and pursuing new things, but they all seek emotional resonance, such as similar ideas and shared memories.'

Shared Community

After studying two generations, people from different generations will live together or share the environment of daily community life, connect with each other, and block each other. Each generation is interested in expressing their individuality and pursuing new things, but they all seek emotional resonance, such as similar ideas and shared memories. I believe that communities have a sense of belonging, bringing together the basic X generation and the most influential Z generation. With the advent of the mobile age, communication and understanding among generations are the biggest social issues of our time. Therefore, in my work, each sphere represents people from different generations. Through psychological intervention (entangled hemp rope, burned fabric), people are connected together. The entire work expresses the recombination and integration of different generations, and it has become a whole of innovation and more possibilities. Different materials and textures are embedded into each other, accompanied by symbiosis with humans. In the community, it conveys the form of harmonious coexistence
