My Design Philosophy

My name is Shi Jiahao, and my English name is Allen.

My Design inspiration is the artificially designed way of life is to strive to create a better state of life. Whatever the heart wants, it is known to be gorgeous. Every time I see the minimalist style, the heart will always be moved by the natural, simple and comfortable atmosphere. I will have a deep understanding of this style, apply it well in my works, and combine the elements of the modern era to create a unique design.

Generational understanding

This is based on the situation of the increasing work pressure of young people, through the classification of different generations and understanding the behavioral habits of different generations, the elderly can be accompanied and the young can be relaxed. It is also a "bond" that connects the community together.

Slider image

The concept of bond

From the concept of bond, many elements are derived, including DNA strand structure, topology structure, knot structure, series structure. The elements are abstracted into the most basic geometric form and utilized. The elements are transformed from abstract to concrete.

The extension of elements

Through the extension of the elements on the element board, many interesting forms can be obtained, and different elements are "defined" according to the needs of different groups, and elements are reinterpreted from both abstract and concrete perspectives. The design method of modularization is obtained, the community planning method is obtained

Design development

In this part, the three-dimensional space to be used in the design is developed based on the elements obtained from the transformation of two-dimensional graphics, and the body is analyzed based on the structure and operation methods (topological structure, Boolean operation method, modularity) obtained in two-dimensional.

Final Design Proposal

This community is clearly next to the next community, but it is cut off by a wall. Therefore, my design target is to take this community as the divergence point, radiate the surrounding communities in a planned way, break the "walls" in the community (physical walls and walls in people's minds)

General Views

It is hoped that the design can change the gap between generations , and at the same time, it is hoped that the community can become a place full of children's laughter. And through the organic architectural form, rich space, break the cold appearance of modern architecture, and awaken people

Design Narrative

Students theme  Integrating warmth elements into the design to create a comfortable and pleasant space aims to not only provide numerical warmth, but also serve as a form of emotional transmission. Color plays a crucial role in design, and warm tones are the core of warm design. In this design, orange and yellow are cleverly used to visually evoke people's associations with warmth, as if reminding people of the warmth of home. This color choice not only makes the space brighter and livelier, but also stimulates people's inner warmth and joy. In this design, soft lighting is used to render pleasant light and shadow, adding a warm atmosphere to the space.

The gentle scattering of this light, like a warm embrace, instantly melts the chill of the soul and makes people feel the warmth of home. In addition, the design also utilizes velvet material, which not only visually presents pleasant light and shadow, but also provides a comfortable touch, making people feel warm and comfortable when in contact. Every touch is a warm embrace, making people involuntarily feel the warmth of home.

The half walls of these two devices combined represent the image of a shelter at home, surrounded by warm lights. This design is not only about creating space, but also about conveying emotions. Whether from a visual, tactile, or sensory perspective, one can deeply feel the warmth and tranquility of home. In this warm space, people not only live, but also feel the warmth and comfort of home.

Honours Project - Site Research and Representation

Part I: Research and Analysis

This is an old boiler room located in a community on Qiyi Road in Baoding City, Hebei Province. The building is made of concrete and steel bars, and is protected by a layer of red bricks outside. The roof is also made of cement beams, and the ground is made of cement, fully reflecting the industrial style of the old era. The interior of the building is divided into two parts. One part is the boiler room and personnel dormitory, with a total height of about 5600mm, a total length of about 12570mm, and a total width of about 7860mm.

The other part is the miscellaneous room, with a total height of about 3100mm, a total length of about 10770mm, a total width of about 3452mm, and a total area of 112.83 square meters. In front of the building is a special university cafeteria, and behind it is a large open space for coal. On the left is the community, and on the right is the community hospital. The community where the building is located is mainly composed of retired college seniors, who enjoy going out for activities or hand weaving.

But the community activity venues are almost non-existent, with only one small path and no street lights at night, making it relatively dim.The old boiler room reflects the imprint of the industrial era and is a witness to time. Its sturdy building structure and heavy materials make people feel the glory and resilience of the past industrial era.

Part II: Site Representation

Narrative:

Ancient boiler houses often carry historical stories that bear witness to important milestones in the development of former workers or communities. In these ancient buildings, people can feel the sedimentation of history and the inheritance of culture. The internal structure of the old boiler room also has a unique aesthetic, with elements such as ventilation equipment, pipelines, and valves creating a unique industrial landscape. The intricate layout of mechanical equipment presents a unique aesthetic.

The object I found in the boiler room is the pipeline, which plays an indispensable role as an intermediate hub connecting the boiler room and each household. However, due to the transportation of hot water, the boiler pipeline gradually begins to rust at contact with water over time, with a central point spreading irregularly. Through the boiler pipeline, it is associated with hot water. The form of water is ever-changing, but a common feature is that water flows. As an intermediate hub, the pipeline is connected in an interlaced manner, presenting a unique industrial style through a special structure. So, I will apply flowing elements and interweaving techniques to my architecture, while maintaining an industrial style, as a witness of time to continue witnessing the development of the new era.

Theoretical Underpinning

Part I: Fragmentation of Generation Z

'."Each small disc 'fragment' signifies a 'point in time' and simultaneously represents the 'fragmentation' of society where all Gen Z members reside.".'

Social Media and Gen Z Fragmentation

Among Gen Z, social media serves as the primary channel for expressing their lives, opinions, and values, as well as accessing information. However, the rapid dissemination of information has resulted in a "fragmented" society. This dispersion of information often leads to superficial understanding and weakens social relationships, as virtual interactions cannot fully replace real ones.

Additionally, Gen Z's emphasis on individualism often undermines team collaboration, posing challenges in group activities. In my artwork, the use of discs to reflect and refract light represents the personalized and fragmented lives of Gen Z members. Each disc fragment symbolizes a moment in time and the broader societal fragmentation experienced by this generation.

Part II:  War of the Baby Boomers

"In my works, the black background symbolizes the ostensible 'peace' of that time, which was deceptively tranquil."

Baby Boomers and the Illusion of Peace

The baby boomers, having lived through wars, were both survivors and victims. This generation's experience varies globally; while the West enjoyed relative stability, the East, particularly China, faced underlying unrest despite outward peace. My artwork uses a black background to symbolize the illusory peace of the era, contrasted with white and red fluff to symbolize social unrest. Red palms and fingerprints depict the rebellion of baby boomers, while broken cotton swabs represent their psychological distress during tumultuous times.

Part III: Social Responsibility of the Baby Boomers and Gen Z

"The burnt bottom stick represents the Baby Boom generation, which supports society through its practical actions."

Generational Approaches to Social Responsibility

Both Gen Z and baby boomers possess a strong sense of social responsibility, though they focus on different issues. Gen Z is particularly concerned with environmental protection, equality, and social innovation. In contrast, baby boomers emphasize depth and stability, influencing social change through pragmatic actions. My artwork represents these dynamics with a burnt stick symbolizing the baby boomers’ foundational support for society, and a pristine stick above, representing Gen Z's diverse contributions to social issues.

The ball of thread within the composition symbolizes the social problems addressed and resolved by both generations, highlighting their shared commitment to social progress.
