Generational understanding

This is based on the situation of the increasing work pressure of young people, through the classification of different generations and understanding the behavioral habits of different generations, the elderly can be accompanied and the young can be relaxed. It is also a "bond" that connects the community together.

Slider image

The concept of bond

From the concept of bond, many elements are derived, including DNA strand structure, topology structure, knot structure, series structure. The elements are abstracted into the most basic geometric form and utilized. The elements are transformed from abstract to concrete.

The extension of elements

Through the extension of the elements on the element board, many interesting forms can be obtained, and different elements are "defined" according to the needs of different groups, and elements are reinterpreted from both abstract and concrete perspectives. The design method of modularization is obtained, the community planning method is obtained

Design development

In this part, the three-dimensional space to be used in the design is developed based on the elements obtained from the transformation of two-dimensional graphics, and the body is analyzed based on the structure and operation methods (topological structure, Boolean operation method, modularity) obtained in two-dimensional.

Final Design Proposal

This community is clearly next to the next community, but it is cut off by a wall. Therefore, my design target is to take this community as the divergence point, radiate the surrounding communities in a planned way, break the "walls" in the community (physical walls and walls in people's minds)

General Views

It is hoped that the design can change the gap between generations , and at the same time, it is hoped that the community can become a place full of children's laughter. And through the organic architectural form, rich space, break the cold appearance of modern architecture, and awaken people

Design Narrative

Students theme  With the development of society, the problem of "aging population" in China and even the world is becoming increasingly serious, and China is also facing more and more severe challenges. This has brought about a series of mental health problems that are gradually becoming prominent: loneliness, unwillingness to speak, communication, and other problems. A survey shows that this phenomenon accounts for over 70% in China and over 85% in foreign countries, and the mental health problems of the elderly urgently need to be addressed. With the continuous progress of society and the passage of time, some elderly people in this community find it increasingly difficult to communicate due to their different cultural levels, while others feel that they lack value due to loneliness and lack of companionship. Therefore, one of the places I have chosen to work on is the Health Care Center, which has designed interactive audio-visual combinations to address the issue of aphasia in the elderly.Nowadays, people in society choose to communicate using electronic devices, such as mobile phones, so I believe that adopting this communication method can not only create innovation but also improve the emotions of the elderly. So the art installation I chose is a microphone, where two people can stand on both sides and communicate with each other without looking at their faces or feeling any burden.

Honours Project - Site Research and Representation

Part I: Research and Analysis

The community I have chosen has a relatively advantageous geographical location. It is located in the Federal Mingdu Community, Qiaoxi District, Shijiazhuang City, Hebei Province, China, and the transportation here is also relatively convenient. There is a primary school nearby with a history of 70 years, just like the community, it has a long history. The architecture and surrounding environment of this community exude a sense of history. This building was originally 25 years ago, but it is still a barren place with underdeveloped economy, no focus, and no attraction; Twenty years ago, there were the earliest buildings and some basic businesses here. Not very innovative or developmental, but since then, memories belonging to a generation have begun; Ten years ago, there were nearly 500 residents living in the community, along with many green plants, as well as many cars and people coming and going every day; At this point, the number of people has reached thousands, transportation has become more convenient, the community environment has also improved, and there are many shops around. But there are many restaurants and small shops around here that can drive the surrounding environment and community atmosphere. More than a decade ago, residents of the community often gathered here to rest, but with the progress of society and the passage of time, residents no longer come here, feeling lonely and desolate, lacking vitality. The buildings have gradually become abandoned, with no one touching or feeling them, and the community has gradually lost a lot of vitality.

Part II: Site Representation

Narrative:

The object I have chosen is the willow tree, because it has the same deep affection for me and the elderly in this community. When I was a child, every time I was unhappy, my parents would bring me here, and so would the elderly. More than a decade ago, the elderly would often gather under this tree to rest and talk, talking and laughing every day. The elderly also often passed by and stopped here to rest. However, with the progress of the times and the passage of time, elderly people are becoming more and more unwilling to communicate and lonely due to cultural differences, lack of family companionship, and physical inconvenience. Some elderly people may not be willing to communicate due to cultural differences that do not share common topics with others, some elderly people may experience depression due to their children not being around for a long time at home, and their psychological state of depression leads to a reluctance to communicate. Some elderly people may feel resistant to communicating with the outside world due to physical inconvenience. So I hope that wooden materials like willows can be used to connect with architecture, preserving this memory and allowing the elderly to regain their happiness here.

Honours Project

Theoretical Underpinning

Part I: Generation Z- “Impulse buying in the Internet age”

"In the context of Generation Z, the Internet not only captures widespread interest but also subtly encourages deeper levels of 'impulse consumption.'"

Addressing Impulsive Consumption in the Internet Era of Generation Z

Under the strong background information of Generation Z, one of the most eye-catching and resonating topics is the Internet era under Generation Z. The Internet is a big space for social interaction, games, shopping, etc. While attracting everyone's interest, it is also subtly stimulating people to carry out so-called "impulse consumption" at a deeper level. Games are an important entertainment consumption for the post-1995 generation. They have a higher preference for games and are more willing to spend virtual money on games. In my life, there is a tragic consequence of impulsive consumption due to addiction to games that eventually leads to family destruction and death. Therefore, in order to put an end to this phenomenon, we should analyze it from three aspects: from the personal point of view, we should resist bad behaviors and refuse to follow the trend, parents should give more company and care to their children in the family, and society should spread more positive energy.

Part II:  Generation “X”-“Class Happiness ”in the Age of Generation “X”

"Generation X is marked by communication difficulties with their parents and a lifestyle dominated by consumerism and celebrity gossip."

Navigating Social and Economic Uncertainty

Generation X is an unknown and confused generation, characterized by communication difficulties with their parents, faster rising housing prices than wages, a life consumed by consumption and shopping, ubiquitous celebrity entertainment gossip, untrustworthy media. The childhood life of this generation of children is also due to various different ideological trends, and the pressure brought by the economic crisis makes this generation of parents feel confused about how to raise their children. Because in that era, parents have no money and lived in a very small room in the basement for a long time.

They have suffered a lot and do not want to let their next generation walk the same road, so only hard work can bring their children a better life, which is the social recognition of that era. Of course, different classes bring different happiness to children. In my parents' world, the biggest challenge for them is not to let their children envy others, not to let their children feel that their parents are inferior to others and cause serious mental health problems.

Part III: Mental health issues in the connection between Generation “Z” and Generation “X”

"The impact of a positive attitude on mental health is crucial; optimistic individuals are more capable of managing stress and challenges effectively."

Understanding Psychological Challenges Across Generations

Through the research and analysis of Generation Z and Generation X, I learned that there is actually a social phenomenon, which is also a topic that many people are concerned about now, that is, psychological problems. There are many factors in the occurrence of psychological problems, there are personal problems, there are family reasons, there are also social problems.
We must adopt a positive attitude towards ourselves, be our best selves, and not listen to rumours from the outside world. What we have now is the best, and on this basis, we should strive to achieve a more ideal life. The impact of a positive attitude on mental health is crucial. People who are optimistic are more likely to cope with challenges and stress, while denial, complaining, and negative attitudes increase the risk of psychological problems. Therefore, thinking positively about themselves, their lives, and the world, can help people overcome and prevent psychological problems. Try to cultivate an optimistic attitude and see the positive aspects of life, which can be very beneficial for mental health.
