My Design Philosophy

Before university, I always enjoyed reading novels, listening to music and watching all kinds of films. Maybe I tend to be introverted; I have little interest or passion in other aspects except what I have to study. Perhaps I am not as rich in inspiration and design as other students. But I am still trying my best. From a personal point of view, my interest may be more inclined to interior design, such as the colour matching of space and the regularity of furniture and rooms. In addition, I prefer the style of minimalism and a series of colours, such as black, white and grey.

The curved roof

I chose the curved roof as the object of this site. From the outside, it uses a kind of white paint, which is waterproof and windproof, in order to prevent the cool, less light and relatively closed environment originally needed by this wine cellar. From the inside, it is made of the same material as the whole building, and it belongs to brick-concrete structure.

The buildings form

The support composed of exposed steel bars hangs in the air between every two curved roofs. The roof of the whole building, which is formed by this arc shape, not only plays a beautiful and shockproof protection role, but also has a large spanning capacity. The whole building can also feel that the space has become more open visually, and its interior will have an interaction with people, and it will give people a sense of centripetal.

The distribution of building structure

Regarding the distribution of building structure, I divide the whole building reasoning into several blocks; Then these blocks are arranged and deformed differently.

Mobility of the building

Firstly, the mobility is reflected in the building structure-roof. Determine the position, size and height of the roof through different blocks; Combine it with the original building to form the activated new building.

Final Design Scheme

"Flow"

The concept of "flow" is taken as the design concept, and the arc structure is taken as the abstract design element to express the parent-child relationship. The connection between parents and children forms different curves and different surfaces with different curves through the transformation of design language. The fluidity of architectural design can first be reflected by the design of architectural appearance, structure and internal space. Surface needs to be realized by two abstract design elements: curve and surface.

Final Design Proposal

The whole building covers an area of 1,350 square meters. Due to the limitations of the load-bearing wall and the division of functional areas, the interior is mainly divided into three major activity spaces. Firstly, a front desk is set at the entrance of the main entrance, and the left side of the front desk belongs to the activity space with children of one to four years old as the target group; The rest area is the main part in the middle of the space, and the bar is set on one side, supplemented by the library and building block room. The rest area is set in the center of the space because it has direct connectivity with every other area. The last part takes the manual area, picture book area, staff rest area and public facilities area as the main functional areas.

General Views

I will need to transform the back and sides of the building and design the landscape. First of all, a parking lot was added in the open area. Because the surrounding area of the building was surrounded by two traffic routes, the completion of the parent-child activity space failed to provide a suitable entrance, and there were no other parking lots around. In addition to some basic landscape design, I also added outdoor amusement facilities that can be provided for children to play, which also takes into account that indoor amusement facilities can not fully meet the needs of children of every age.

Design Narrative

The concretisation of "flow" extends the meaning of communication or interaction. On one hand, interaction is regarded as a part of the concept of this device, which can strengthen the communication and interaction between parents and children, promoting their parent-child relationship. The concept of "flow" is abstracted, and the arc structure is derived from considerations of shape and line. The use of arcs, instead of straight lines, symbolises the connection between parents and children. The aim is to embody and incorporate these arc elements or structures in the design of the device. To enhance the parent-child relationship through spatial interaction and communication, there is a gradual decrease in interaction between many working parents and their children. In addition to the indoor space at home that can provide activities, there are relatively few resources in public open parent-child activity spaces. Therefore, the design of such a mobile device aims to increase interaction between parents and their children. Geometric figures composed of arc shapes are interspersed to form "walls," which are hollowed out at different heights with circular or semi-circular patterns of various sizes. This allows parents and children to walk through them, thereby increasing interaction and communication. The top of the device utilises a complete mirror to reflect and broaden the field of vision, creating a connection with the entire space. Additionally, the use of different colours adds visual richness and makes the device stand out when placed in indoor spaces.

Honours Project - Site Research and Representation

Part I: Research and Analysis

The wine cellar is located in Mianer Textile Factory along Heping Road, Chang'an District, Shijiazhuang City, Hebei Province. The building was built in 1955 and belongs to a state-owned enterprise. The abandoned wine cellar is planned to be preserved, with Heping Road as the route. The surrounding areas are mainly residential living communities, and there are mainly office buildings, schools, commercial buildings and other areas adjacent to it. The whole wine cellar covers a relatively large area. The main body is a rectangular building with a length of 45 metres and a width of 30 metres, and its side is a plane composed of three arched doors with the highest position of 7.5 metres.

Part II: Site Representation

The design of the curved roof owned by this site, the relationship with people and the relationship with society. This arc structure is like a social structure. "Flow" is used to symbolise the communication and interaction between parents and children. The arc structure is used as the hub and connection of the parent-child relationship, and it is also used as an element to arrange reasonable moving lines and modelling structures for indoor space layout, so that these different spaces can blend with each other. From the essence of this object, the arc roof belongs to a relatively stable structure. Through the structure, we can think of the corresponding stable living environment or social structure. In fact, the stability of this structure is just like the balanced and stable living environment of people.

Part I: Generation Z and Self Identification

'Generation Z is an era closely related to intelligent tools and technology. People in this generation can't live without it, and these people who become "phubbing" are all caused by using smart phones and other technological ......'

Phubbing

This work of mine is based on science and technology. Generation Z is an era closely related to intelligent tools and technology. People in this generation can't live without it, and these people who become "phubbing" are all caused by using smart phones and other technological devices with their heads down for a long time. The colorful laser paper represents the illusory online world; It also represents the radiation of technological devices such as smart phones. The semicircular frame represents that network information connects the whole earth through scientific and technological equipment, smart phones and other items.

Part II:  Pre-generation Z and Self Identification

'....people's lack of faith. And use light to symbolize the spirit or material that we pursue and believe in.'

Faith

One of the phenomena presented through my essay is people's lack of faith. And use light to symbolize the spirit or material that we pursue and believe in. As a background of the whole, the white fold on the bottom represents the lost faith, and the side shows the difficulty of regaining the faith.

Part III: Generations and Community

'the development of Z-generation smart phones and other technologies, reducing people's face-to-face communication, so its structure is also biased towards straight lines and right angles, which is relatively stiff'.

Generational Communication

This collage is formed by comparing the Z generation with the baby boomers. I adopted some elements in the first two collage, and the upper part is made of laser paper, which also symbolizes the development of Z-generation smart phones and other technologies, reducing people's face-to-face communication, so its structure is also biased towards straight lines and right angles, which is relatively stiff. The lower part is made of the material of the Cheval Board, which symbolizes that the technology of the baby boomers was not so developed at that time, and people generally pursued faith and paid attention to communication, so its shape was mainly arc-shaped and relatively soft. Overall, through the comparison between the two, it explains the attitudes and changes of society and people under the two generations.
