My Design Philosophy

"Zaha Hadid is the designer whom I admire the most. Her design works give me insights into design. Her works boldly use space and geometric structures, reflecting the complex characteristics of urban architecture and enriching the world. The mesmerizing lines in her work give me a real sense of how the design would work. It makes me understand that although design methods and thinking are essential, the cultivation of my own personality and temperament may also become an important part of the formation of design style."

Honours Project - Community Integration

Project Brief

“Utopian journey”

  • Issues to be addressed - My impact on the community is aimed at fostering communication and interaction among individuals.

  • Potentials/resources from the site - Surrounding shopping malls stimulate consumption, promoting local shopping areas and fostering sustainable development.

  • Design scheme - it can drive the communication between different groups of people in the surrounding villages.

  • Structural - The transformation of the amusement park in Ward Land, the centre of the Castle of Ward Land, and the development of the surrounding villages through Orley Mall contribute to the economic growth and sustainability of the entire commercial space, addressing the social problem of limited interaction between people from different classes and fostering a more inclusive interactive experience.

  • The final goal(s)/ achievement - Through the integration of my design into the lives of local residents and the implementation of adaptable spatial functions, I aim to strengthen exchanges between neighboring villages and enhance the lifestyle of residents. By functioning as a magnet, the building facilitates the convergence of opposing cultures, fostering a broader community culture and promoting integrated and developed population communication.

Considering the structure

First, considering the structure of Wardland Castle and the "penetration" of the design concept, the overall design will be centred on the function, allowing people to move freely through the building and the surrounding landscape. The interactive style in the space allows people to have a dialogue with the building. Even when people see some symbols, they will think and even trigger an emotion, which makes people deeply involved.

Considering indoor space

When considering indoor space, it is time to enhance the circulation of indoor space. Firstly, we should consider the population, thinking that the object of service is mainly children, so the circulation of population is very important. Secondly, there are a lot of exits and entrances in each space, so it is better to use these advantages to increase the usability of the space, so the center connects the installation space. And rest area as a connection, better serve the crowd

Landscape and shape of the building

Secondly, it starts from the landscape and shape of the building, which will not only continue the characteristics of the building itself, but also increase the interaction in it. In a word, the interactive experience space is a place for people to entertain themselves while improving their cognition. Finally, it provides a more orderly order and scheme for the lack of previous landscape order, and uses lights, smells and the distinctive characteristics of local resources to improve the land value around the site.

Skeching

This drawing can help the audience understand my sketch more clearly. In order to better regulate the coordination between the communities, like a journey, there will always be stops and stops, and there will always be epiphanies. Each "paragraph" is to connect the previous paragraph and undertake the next paragraph, and at the same time, to ensure the continuity of narrative by using design techniques such as bedding, adjustment, coherence and sublimation over space. So that people can freely shuttle in the building itself.

Final Design Scheme

“Utopian journey”

This project focuses on the objective conditions and facts of Beijing Woodland abandoned singing Bar. Through the historical analysis of the city where it is located and its own history, it finds out that its geographical location has its own characteristics, and puts forward "commercial interaction" as the core theme. Taking the historical culture of the building and the surrounding community and environment as a starting point, the interior is combined with the landscape and makes it respond to it. With sustainable development as the driving force, it activates the innovation and practicality of the community and finally realizes the ideal model.

Final Design Proposal

The research results of this paper mean that abandoned buildings can be reused under the premise of reasonable protection. At the same time, more attention should be paid to the differences and contradictions of different people with profound cultural backgrounds, and the effective resources around the buildings should be combined through design.

General Views

Through research, we extracted elements based on local location, construction materials, structure analysis, human environment, historical background, and social problems, and obtained creative inspiration through rational and emotional analysis. According to the needs of different groups, the built environment is integrated to connect people and things around, and different groups of people and classes penetrate each other. It is necessary to make use of this feature and advantage to integrate the built environment, connect people and things around, and infiltrate different classes of people into each other.

Community Project - Participant’s Installation

Design Narrative

People can engage with architecture through various sensory languages. For instance, differences in hearing, vision, taste, and psychology yield diverse design impacts on art installations. Initially, visual language plays a significant role as people from different backgrounds bring their own perspectives and sensibilities. They are drawn to the art installation's appearance and materials. As they explore the building, they realize that the architectural structure captivates them visually, guiding them into the interior space. Furthermore, people discover that different materials evoke distinct sensations. Looking through glass, they can visually penetrate another glass surface, while concrete reflects various structural elements. Finally, mirrors allow people to see different versions of themselves. Regarding light, the building features multiple windows of varying sizes. From different angles, people can observe various cloud formations, presenting diverse scenery to the viewer's eyes. Additionally, the presence of spherical mirrors symbolizes the connection between the surrounding village and the mall, linking different communities and serving as a focal point of response. There are multiple ways to perceive art installations within such buildings. Appreciating them involves not only listening to the language but also experiencing a psychological impact.

Honours Project - Site Research and Representation

Part I: Research and Analysis

The site I have chosen is located in the abandoned amusement park in Wardland, Changping District of Beijing. It is surrounded by a large area and the Ole Shopping Center. The site is situated in the diagonal middle of the two areas. In this case, a social problem also arises. In fact, the two areas are quite distinct from each other. People can live well in their respective areas, but there is no communication between them. Different classes of people rarely interact, so the challenge is to make the characteristics of different groups of people into an interactive experience. In terms of economic development, the surrounding area is mainly divided into Aolai Shopping Center and Changping Village. As for the impact on the community, I would like to create an effect of communication and interaction between people. At the same time, the surrounding shopping centres can stimulate consumption, promoting not only the surrounding shopping areas but also sustainable development. Therefore, it can promote communication between different groups in the surrounding villages.

Part II: Site Representation

My location is in an abandoned castle in Beijing Badaling Ole. The building materials here are mainly made of concrete and iron frame. After more than ten years of change, the rain and air have caused the steel to oxidise, producing rust, and forming the present rust spots. There is also an interesting connection between concrete and rust, where objects of completely different properties come into play, with some of the old rust falling on it. Rust spots also form different shapes of rust. There are big and small, deep and shallow, and a variety of contradictions piled up. Its surface effect is remarkable, making it a good catalyst. Whether it's as a field of application, shaping or magnetic character, it all points in the same direction - the contradiction and complexity of architecture, a conflict between iron and concrete, and the changes brought about by history. Within these changes, there is a constant and interesting conflict, which also has a connection with the community around me. The community around me is divided between the village and the square, and the two have the same paradoxical relationship as cement and steel.

Theoretical Underpinning

Part I: Generation Z and Self Identification

'Although freer lifestyle brought them to bring them with determination and ideas, but I more hope they this generation can make better use of this generation to bring the advantages'

Determination of ideas

It is because of this dual contradiction that they have brought unprecedented ideals, they are bold and confident, and they are brave in their propositions; However, it is precisely because of this dual contradiction that they also bring great obstacles, excessive consumption, resulting in the lack of savings; Most of the money is spent on clothes, food, movies, resulting in poor self-control; Although freer lifestyle brought them to bring them with determination and ideas, but I more hope they this generation can make better use of this generation to bring the advantages of, I want to say, they can from the viewpoint of interrelated, interaction and contradiction analysis, seize the key, find the key. What I want to express through this work is the contradiction of this era, this is the contradiction they are facing. The contradiction between black and white, the contradiction between more and less, is greater than the contradiction between small. The white tip wants to break through the contradiction of red square. It is under this contradiction that they spend their time.

Part II:  Pre-generation Z and Self Identification

'Due to different values from the older generation, the real world may be relatively unfriendly to us, so sometimes this generation will choose to lower their own or family's expectations to relieve some of the pressure ..... '

Bereavement culture

A "bereavement" culture is prevalent in this generation. Due to different values from the older generation, the real world may be relatively unfriendly to us, so sometimes this generation will choose to lower their own or family's expectations to relieve some of the pressure and expectation. Generation Z should be able to communicate with the outside world and pay more attention to the past and future while facing information technology. The blue spherical shape in the middle of the main body represents the traditional concept they want to grasp, through this woven network to find their own era.

Part III: Generations and Community

'whether education takes place in the countryside, education mechanisms begin to take root, and Generation Alpha is characterised by their ability to adapt perfectly to the options offered by technological progress'

The similarities and differences between Gen z and Baby Boomers

Whether Gen x or Gen z, the mall will eventually be a market for young people, and the village leaders will be dominated by the older generation. This seems to form the contradiction between the market and the countryside, but also represents the contradiction of the characteristics of The Times. This is the conflict I'm talking about now between Gen z and Gen X. What we are missing, however, is Generation Alpha, where education takes place in the countryside, education mechanisms begin to take root, and Generation Alpha is characterised by their ability to adapt perfectly to the options offered by technological progress. Technology stimulates the cognitive level of these children, and as a result, they can develop amazing abilities and skills. At the same time, it also promotes the development of local villages and effectively links this contradictory relationship.
