My Design Philosophy

My work focuses on practical and aesthetic significance; It is a combination of functional and aesthetic results, which can be designed as a natural person from the perspective of internal structure or specific form. A design studio I like, which comes from England and is called Nermeiri because this studio is committed to developing a new material from the relationship between people and between people and nature, turning vegetable leaves into a sustainable new material without pollution.

Final Design Scheme

Root

This design focuses on the psychological needs of the elderly, with "roots" as the foundation. Different functions and spaces are designed through four aspects: "inheritance", "companionship", "communication", and "identification", bringing the elderly together with other age groups and making the relationship network of people in the community closer through different activities.

Final Design Proposal

That is to say, each petal has its own root vein, and only with roots can there be blooming petals. It is precisely the combination of different petals that gives rise to a flower that can break through constraints and bloom in the most beautiful posture. Just like during the Shanghai pandemic, when supply was in short supply, the elderly also helped many families and outsiders by raising their own vegetables, melons, and fruits at home. Not only did they solve their own food and clothing problems, but they also helped others, demonstrating absolute strength and love.

General Views

The overall appearance will mainly focus on expanding the space, increasing outdoor space, providing a more comfortable living space for the elderly. It also cites the characteristics of root and uses the design feature of interlacing, making the overall appearance of the building more layered

Design Narrative

In April 2022, a large-scale virus infection broke out in Shanghai, causing Shanghai residents to stay indoors and lack sufficient rations and daily necessities to sustain their lives. There were gradually reports of deaths due to hunger and illness. The elderly mainly grew fruits and vegetables in their own homes, and the planting area was small. As one of the most important groups in society, although they gradually grew older, their physical fitness also gradually decreased. But as the earliest generation of social development, they are the leaders and engines of future generations' development. Each group has its own strength, and when combined, they can produce more abundant flowers. The outer white frame of the 25m x 25m device embodies various constraints, hardships, diseases, etc., such as the large-scale epidemic that plagued Shanghai residents in April 2022, and the roots and stamens inside are constantly breaking through the cage and constraints, showcasing their most attractive and prosperous side. When a person touches a petal with their hand, the roots connected to the petal also emit light. That is to say, each petal has its own root vein, and only with roots can there be blooming petals. It is precisely the combination of different petals that gives rise to a flower that can break through constraints and bloom in the most beautiful posture.

Honours Project - Site Research and Representation

Part I: Research and Analysis

The location is an abandoned bar situated on Hongqiao Road in Shanghai. The surrounding space is spacious, and transportation is convenient. In addition to subway buses, there are also elevated bridges that prevent congestion. There are many schools around this abandoned bar that were abandoned due to a different audience. There are many scenic spots around the location, but they are relatively scattered with numerous residential areas, relatively developed road traffic, and high pedestrian flow. There are few community roads and only one main route, which causes inconvenience to people's travel. There are many traditional manual workshops around, such as yellow wine brewing workshops, manual soy sauce brewing workshops, woodworking workshops, etc. The overall appearance of the workshop is a traditional green brick and black tile Jiangnan water town building structure. There is a large space at both ends of this row of houses and a small space in the middle. The house structure here is a traditional brick and stone structure, and the skin of the walls begins to peel off, exposing the inner walls. Using sloping roofs and wooden beams.

Part II: Site Representation

I chose this wooden beam structure, which is a composite structure. From a social perspective, there are large residential areas around the address I chose, consisting of single-family and high-rise buildings, where communication between people is significantly reduced. This wooden beam represents a future development direction that I hope for. Human beings not only need sustainable development in the economy, but also in terms of interpersonal communication and connection. It should be sustainable and resonate with the lifestyle of the older generation in the past. Neighbours should exchange greetings with each other.

Theoretical Underpinning

Part I: Generation Z and Self Identification

'how generation Z came into being and developed in the face of economic globalization and the impact of foreign culture, and what new directions the development mode in the future will bring to human life.'

The future of Gen Z

Explore and establish the life mode of generation Z in the future situation to cope with the integration of new life style and tradition brought by the development of the times. This paper expounds how generation Z came into being and developed in the face of economic globalization and the impact of foreign culture, and what new directions the development mode in the future will bring to human life. It is hoped that through this discussion, the relationship between generation Z and tradition in the future situation can be understood, and experience and conclusions can be effectively drawn.

Part II:  Pre-generation Z and Self Identification

'the generation and development of environmental protection awareness in the past X generations of Generation Z, and some dawn brought by solving ecological problems through design.'

Environment and Gen X

This article focuses on the generation and development of environmental protection awareness in the past X generations of Generation Z, and some dawn brought by solving ecological problems through design. It is hoped that through this article's discussion, we can gain insight into the deep significance and development path of environmental protection awareness.

Part III: Generations and Community

'and The commonalities and contradictions between "the transition and transformation of the environmental protection consciousness of Generation X"'

Consciousness with Gen X and Z

From the perspective of design, the article discusses that "Generation z will return to tradition more and more in the future" and The commonalities and contradictions between "the transition and transformation of the environmental protection consciousness of Generation X", explore the significance and development direction of the two at a deeper level, and take the Suzhou Museum designed by I.M. Pei as the intermediary to specifically elaborate the relationship between the two. I hope that through this discussion, I can gain insight into the social problems in the future situation and draw effective experience and conclusions.
