My Design Philosophy

The design originates from life, and life is the source of the design. We should pursue the existence of the beauty of design in life. In the field of design, I believe that design is people-oriented and respects the laws of nature. Design can change people and environments. We should improve people's living environment and meet people's needs for life through continuous thinking and innovation.

Old and the New

Adhering to the concept of "keeping the old as before and keeping the old as new", we have carried out protective repairs to the Zhengtai Hotel, ensuring that the old buildings can be reused without changing the architectural style. The Zhengtai Hotel will be transformed into a historical exhibition themed hotel, giving the community more functions and creating an interactive historical exhibition space at the centre of the square. Finally, through landscape design, the surrounding buildings will be connected to achieve the effect of gathering crowds in the entire exhibition space.

Future landscape planning

A single square appears spacious, retaining some of the original open space and re planning based on some of the existing greenery. The purpose is to connect the surrounding buildings, making the entire area more complete and beautiful. Consider factors such as lighting, greenery, trees, and facilities to fully leverage the role of the landscape.

Landscape - connecting part

Based on the analysis of the location of the site and the surrounding buildings, the landscape should be connected to the buildings on all sides, and the landscape is an important bridge leading to these buildings. As a link between buildings, the purpose is to create rich and diverse spaces and activate idle spatial resources through community activities.

Transitional design

The inspiration for the transitional part between the building and the exhibition hall in the center of the square comes from the roots of trees that emerge from the soil, rooted in the city, and ultimately surrounding the building. The landscape mainly consists of three parts: the top of the exhibition hall in the central area, the top of the building, and the connecting part between the two, which are separated during the transition and allow people to freely shuttle.

Final Design Scheme

“Inclusion”

According to the division of indoor space height and area, there are mainly two small spaces. The overall colour scheme corresponds to the surrounding environment, with spotlights as the main lighting, highlighting the exhibition walls and items. The colours are simple and lively, and the content is clear and easy to understand. Additionally, some local historical and cultural elements, such as trains, will also be incorporated. The interior space integrates relaxing streamline elements, and the curved lines symbolize the history and culture of the city.

Final Design Proposal

The landscape mainly consists of three parts: the top of the exhibition hall in the central area, the top of the building, and the connecting part between the two, which are separated during the transition and allow people to freely shuttle. The Zhengtai Restaurant in the evening and at night, surrounded by bustling streets, is a quiet and leisurely place. People can not only take a walk here, but also sit down and chat. There are lights below each step in the sinking activity space, which can illuminate the entire platform.

General Views

The historical exhibition space primarily showcases the history of the surrounding buildings, allowing people to gain a deeper understanding of these architectural landmarks. The overall colour scheme harmonizes with the surrounding environment, while spotlights serve as the main lighting, accentuating the exhibition walls and items. The colours are kept simple and lively, ensuring clear and easily understandable content. Additionally, local historical and cultural elements are incorporated into the design. The interior space seamlessly integrates relaxing streamline elements, and the incorporation of curved lines symbolizes the rich history and culture of the city.

Context, Site analysis, Design Narratives and Concept

Design Narrative

The concept word for future life is 'inclusion'. Urban inclusion It means that outsiders can not only obtain the satisfaction of economic and material conditions but also quickly integrate into the local culture, integrate into the local life circle, settle down, and gain a deep sense of satisfaction. Cultural inclusion Recognise that different cultures need to understand and appreciate each other. For different people, views, cultures, and religions, they are inclusive, not exclusive. My inspiration comes from inflatable touch balls. It extends from containment to wrapping. Place many inflatable balloons in a certain space, and people can feel the sensation of being wrapped when they walk in. Transparent glass and balloons fully achieve a beautiful effect. People can enter the cube from both ends and experience the feeling of being wrapped through interaction with the balloons. The cube has gaps at the top for ventilation.

Honours Project - Site Research and Representation

Part I: Research and Analysis

Zhengtai Restaurant is located at the core of the cultural tourism center of Shijiazhuang's Central Business District (CBD). It is situated next to Metro Line 1, offering convenient transportation. Nearby, there is the Shijiazhuang Monument, which serves as a historical and cultural exchange site. Zhengtai Restaurant can be regarded as the origin of the city's rise and development. It reflects the regional characteristics and historical context of the city, making it an important landmark and a symbol representing the city's history and progress. In the future, it will also serve as a symbolic area where the city's memory and modern industry blend, highlighting its distinctive features. It aims to integrate Shijiazhuang's history and culture with new cultural formats, such as cultural creativity, art exhibitions, tourism, and leisure activities.

Part II: Site Representation

The object I chose is the logo of China Railway, so I conducted analysis and experiments on the appearance, meaning, and connotation of the logo. In 1907, as railways and industries developed, Zhengtai Restaurant was built and put into use one after another. This emblem was created simultaneously, inspired by the railway and the restaurant. It symbolizes the history of urban development and represents the cities' progress thanks to the railways. Therefore, it holds great historical significance. In terms of appearance, it consists of the combination of variant Chinese characters "工人" (meaning "workers"). The character "工" is encircled by the character "人" (meaning "people") in a circular shape resembling the sun, symbolizing light and freedom. The lower horizontal line of the character "工" is longer than the upper horizontal line, representing the horizon and providing a sense of safety and groundedness. By examining the rails closely, I discovered that most rails are secured and connected using screws and nuts. Sleepers are laid beneath the tracks to bear the pressure. Wood, with its elasticity and versatility, can be molded into various shapes, making it suitable for subsequent designs. Screws and nuts, on the other hand, are firm and used for fixation. The material testing and deformation treatment provided ideas and support for my future design. Through in-depth research on railways and tracks, I explored the adaptability and compression resistance of wood, as well as the functionality of screws and nuts. This knowledge extends to the design process and informs how these two elements can be utilized.

Part I: Generation Z and Self Identification

'The individuality of society is developed and the individual is respected. Family structure also affects generation Z. With the construction of modernization and the influence of modernization, a diversified family structure has gradually been formed'

Generous

Generation Z refers to the generation born from 1995 to 2009, and also refers to the people of the new era. It is a generation with distinct intergenerational characteristics and intergenerational symbols. In my opinion, generation Z is a generation where individuality and tolerance coexist. The individuality of society is developed and the individual is respected. Family structure also affects generation Z. With the construction of modernization and the influence of modernization, a diversified family structure has gradually been formed from the big family in the past. This will help them get better growth conditions and environment, and make them get more attention. Compared with other generations, generation Z people pay attention to experience and have distinct personality. They are more able to accept and try new things. More importantly, Gen Z is good at absorption and likes to realize self-worth through creation. The digital era surrounds generation Z. The generation is inclusive and innovative and changes in the family structure.

Part II:  Pre-generation Z and Self Identification

'happiness and bear great pressure at the same time. They are Generation Y who are carrying a heavy load. Although they grow with the development of economy and society.'

Generation Y of Weight bearing forward

Generation Y of Weight bearing forward Millennials are those who were born under age in the 20th century and reached adulthood after entering the 21st century. Also known as Generation Y . Enjoy happiness and bear great pressure at the same time. They are Generation Y who are carrying a heavy load. Although they grow with the development of economy and society. However, with the rapid development of society and economic growth, they are still facing the pressure from their families. In the "421" family structure, Generation Y "has the old at the top and the young at the bottom". This generation is characterized by double contradictions. While enjoying material prosperity, they are also experiencing tremendous pressure for a better life.      The red petals represent the withering age of generation Y, the white cotton represents the invisible pressure of generation Y as a cloud. The upper represents elderly and the lower represents children, and the white cloth represents mountain under pressure

Part III: Generations and Community

'....family structure and system have a certain impact on individuals and society. It is also an important factor that causes the different ideas and pursuits of Generation Z and Generation Y.'

Generation Z and Generation Y a comparrison

Social development such as the Internet has had a profound impact on Generation Z and Generation Y. Since the birth of Generation Z, the Internet has become more developed and material life has become more abundant. They have witnessed the development of the Internet and are more rich in technology and experience. .Families with diversity and "421" structure affect Generation Z and Generation Y. Such changes in family structure and system have a certain impact on individuals and society. It is also an important factor that causes the different ideas and pursuits of Generation Z and Generation Y. Generation Z pursues individuality and innovation while enjoying the achievements brought by economy, society and family. They are good at learning and absorbing, and then creating. The emergence and popularisation of the internet have affected people within the two generations., family factors affect the two generation, with differences in idea and pursuits between the two create an issue of consumption differences.
