Generational understanding

This is based on the situation of the increasing work pressure of young people, through the classification of different generations and understanding the behavioral habits of different generations, the elderly can be accompanied and the young can be relaxed. It is also a "bond" that connects the community together.

Slider image

The concept of bond

From the concept of bond, many elements are derived, including DNA strand structure, topology structure, knot structure, series structure. The elements are abstracted into the most basic geometric form and utilized. The elements are transformed from abstract to concrete.

The extension of elements

Through the extension of the elements on the element board, many interesting forms can be obtained, and different elements are "defined" according to the needs of different groups, and elements are reinterpreted from both abstract and concrete perspectives. The design method of modularization is obtained, the community planning method is obtained

Design development

In this part, the three-dimensional space to be used in the design is developed based on the elements obtained from the transformation of two-dimensional graphics, and the body is analyzed based on the structure and operation methods (topological structure, Boolean operation method, modularity) obtained in two-dimensional.

Final Design Proposal

This community is clearly next to the next community, but it is cut off by a wall. Therefore, my design target is to take this community as the divergence point, radiate the surrounding communities in a planned way, break the "walls" in the community (physical walls and walls in people's minds)

General Views

It is hoped that the design can change the gap between generations , and at the same time, it is hoped that the community can become a place full of children's laughter. And through the organic architectural form, rich space, break the cold appearance of modern architecture, and awaken people

Design Narrative

Students theme  In the device, some randomly arranged lines form a tree-like shape, tightly packed below, but scattered above, indicating different social and lifestyle habits at different times. As young people complete their studies and grow older, they gradually leave their hometowns, and parents, and start their own lives. The scattered threads seem to be the emotional bond between them and their loved ones, intertwined but extending beyond the wall. At the same time, they have a bond with their hometown and a longing for the outside world. When elderly people grow old and their children are not around, living alone, and so on, they see a framed picture in a hole in the wall, just like their comfortable and plain life after getting old. The gaps in the wall may be their communication with their children.
Where people from different generations live together, help each other, and solve the problem of "islands" in elderly care institutions. In the same community, there are some outstanding retired elderly people and outstanding young people who have just entered society. They seem to be two unrelated groups, but there is actually a great connection between them. They need and respect each other. Most elderly people feel like they have returned to society and come into contact with many new things when interacting with young people. This "home-style" mutual aid elderly care model helps to build a new type of friendly and symbiotic community

Honours Project - Site Research and Representation

Part I: Research and Analysis

The abandoned boiler room is located in Xingguang Garden Community, Zhuiliu Street, Jingxiu District, Baoding City, Hebei Province, China, with a total area of about 110 square meters, one floor, and a building height of five meters. The location I have chosen is the abandoned boiler room in Xingguang Garden Community, Jingxiu District, Baoding City, Hebei Province. The boiler room is a product of the last century, a place where people used to heat and burn coal in the past, a place that carries many people's memories, history and memory of this community, and a symbol left over from urban development.

•The degradation of building performance, over a long period of time, leads to severe damage and ageing of the building, resulting in an overall outdated environment
•Lack of public facilities, small green area, occupation of roads by miscellaneous items, lack of accessible equipment, ageing and damage to lighting facilities
•Lack of public space, lack of entertainment and leisure venues and facilities, and residents' lack of appropriate public social spaces

Part II: Site Representation

Narrative:

The deepening of population aging has made the issue of elderly care increasingly prominent and has become a focus of attention for society and the country. The development of social economy and the transformation of family structure have promoted the progress of elderly care concepts and social conditions, and have also had a significant impact on traditional family elderly care models. Among them, urban elderly people are more affected and affected due to their social environment background. Aging is a global issue that affects many countries. When dealing with the issue of aging, many countries pay more attention to the construction of healthcare and nursing homes, but often overlook the psychological needs of middle-aged and elderly people. They may also experience loneliness, loss, and a feeling of loneliness that is not needed by society.
•The relocation of indigenous people has resulted in a lack of fresh blood in the community, with the majority being elderly people,
•A place without emotional and social interaction, where neighbors do not know each other and are unfamiliar with each other
•Easy to be overlooked and forgotten, but a cultural dividend of modern cities
•Leisure is monotonous, roads are narrow, and living standards do not match the overall level of the city
• The boiler room has identification features that cannot be replaced by other
industrial buildings in terms of appearance, which is conducive to diversified creative design. A large number of boiler houses that rely on urban renewal and "rebirth" not only continue the city's heavy industrial culture, but also contain new vitality.
• Having historical significance and value, it is a symbol of an era More humanistic than the current new community

Honours Project

Theoretical Underpinning

Part I: Identity Development of Generation Z

"Generation Z is redefining consumption as a reflection of lifestyle choices, signalling their potential to influence and lead societal progress."

Generation Z's unique values and lifestyle choices

Generation Z is more eager to be able to make choices freely. For example, they are not afraid to quit their stable jobs and take a different path, nor are they willing to leave the bustling big cities and return to the countryside to enjoy a peaceful and ordinary life. The young consumer group represented by Generation Z is rising strongly and will have a multi-dimensional impact on the entire Internet consumption. Therefore, consumption is no longer just the satisfaction of their needs, but the pursuit of a way of life.

Their consciousness, behaviour, and other factors also affect the consumption trends and trends of this era, which resonate harmoniously with the development of the times, social progress, changes in life, and the evolution of trends. In the lives of Generation Z, consumer shopping is just a form of deception, and the pursuit of success is their life deception. From their rational consumption and value choices, it can be seen that they are a generation worthy of expectation and trust, as well as a generation capable of taking on important responsibilities.

Part II: Self-value mining of Generation X

"Generation X is a generation of suffering, children who have been educated in frustration will have corresponding shadows in emotional expression......"

Experiences of Generation X

Generation X is a generation of suffering, children who have been educated in frustration will have corresponding shadows in emotional expression and handling emotions, causing them to become dull and depressed, difficult to express happy emotions, and may have sadness and anxiety, which leads to them always thinking that they should work hard for their parents or children, and assume responsibilities for both the old and the young. Become a pillar of existence.

Now, however, many Gen Xers are prone to losing control of their emotions, or even suffering from depression, because after their parents die, or their children work and get married, they don't feel needed, they feel abandoned by society, and they can't accept that their status has declined.

Part III: Understanding and contradictions in different eras

"They are all striving to become a better generation and a better version of themselves. "

Contrasts and commonalities.

Different colour schemes were used to represent two different generations of people. The more prominent part of the colours represented the generation who preferred innovation and trend, while the other part was more stable in colour. The soft texture represented the generation who followed the rules. They are intertwined and interwoven, influencing each other, creating conflicts and barriers, reconciliation, and mutual understanding.

They are all striving to become a better generation and a better version of themselves. When they see the bigger world outside and finally want to go back to their hometown, they shouldn't have any worries and can come back anytime. Parents and children should give up their meaningless vanity. Both Gen Z and Gen X need to learn to be better with themselves.
