My Design Philosophy

I am very glad to be a designer. Design is a multi-faceted course, integrating various subjects such as sociology, philosophy, etc., which makes the process of design a very interesting one, and my passion also comes from it. In the exploration of each project, I feel different cultural customs and cultures, which has become my favourite stage. The design process is like a journey, a pilgrimage, in which I accumulate strength and reach the temple in my heart at the end of the journey.

The extension of the elements analyzed by object is inspired by the protection and wrapping sense of tent, which shows an affinity. Bubbles connect and fuse with each other, and when bubbles touch each other, they stick, they connect. This is also what I hope the community can see.

The main public area is divided into two spatial areas, the above ground part is an undulating "hill", the other part is a semi-open public sunken space, the two areas carry out different activities.

Noise is the first problem to be solved when communicating and doing activities in a community space. Attaching sound-absorbing panels to the walls is a major solution. The sound absorbing board is mainly made of environmentally friendly, green and recyclable materials to promote the sustainable development of community resources.

Hill of multiple events

An open community centre without walls. Both adults and children can participate and experience the fun of parent-child activities. Older people can also reminisce with their colleagues and reminisce about the old days. Centred on the once abandoned factory workshop, it extends into the community. It's not just an extension of generations, it's an extension of communication.

Final Design Proposal

The transformation mainly provides two directions of services for the community residents. One is the life service place, the main functions include life supermarket, retail store, community service station; The second is a place of leisure and entertainment, which is concretely manifested as a large public space, providing a place for community residents to communicate, rest and exercise. In addition, including some public space infrastructure, such as toilets, utility rooms,

General Views

Open community public Spaces introduce natural elements, allowing residents to enjoy themselves and provide services for daily life. Revitalize the community and promote its sustainable development.

Context, Site analysis, Design Narratives and Concept

Community Project - Participant’s Installation

Design Narrative

Integration  The theme "integration" is based on the changing and weakening of the hierarchical concept of "family" in some East Asian families in general. By weakening the hierarchical concept and forced thinking in the family, people with different identities in the "family" can interact and communicate. Experience a new type of parent-child relationship, which is the premise for it to change. When there is no universal definition of "home," fusion and blurring limits become simpler, and the parent-child relationship is no longer confined to the simple home, but is integrated everywhere. It also helps to change the contradictions between the two generations and ease the pressure from the family. It helps the community integrate better.

Honours Project - Site Research and Representation

Part I: Research and Analysis

The site is located at No. 32 Sanfeng Middle Road, Lianchi District, Baoding City, Hebei Province. The site of the waste gas plant formerly belonging to the Second Chemical Plant. The three surrounding areas are the dormitory of the second chemical plant, the bungalow area and the residence of the returnable building, which together form a small community. The history of this site was abandoned by the second chemical plant workshop, and then it was put into use by the driving school for five years. The building is 12m long, 6m wide and 3.6m high. Located on the south side of the dormitory of the second Chemical Plant, one third of the building is covered by vegetation.

Part II: Site Representation

Narrative:

The item I chose was a broken plastic sheet to seal the window. China began to use plastic sheets to seal Windows as early as modern times. Rural residents in China have begun sealing their Windows with plastic sheeting to keep them warm as the cold season begins in November. The role of the plastic sheet is to form a layer of air in the middle of the glass, reduce the circulation of air, reduce the thermal conductivity, so as to achieve the role of heat preservation. I saw cobwebs, snail shells, and a lot of dust near the plastic. When the eyes shine in, she gives me a warm feeling, I feel its friendly life force, it protects the room in the warmth, so that people are not subject to the cold.

Theoretical Underpinning

Part I: Generation Z - Navigating the Digital Divide

"As Generation Z navigates a world vastly different from that of their predecessors, understanding their sense of separation is crucial for providing the support needed to bridge their digital and real-world experiences."

Navigating the Digital Divide

The Chinese Generation Z refers to the generation born between 1995 and 2010. They grew up in the era of digitization and globalization, significantly different from previous generations. Due to social, economic, technological, and other factors, Generation Z in China often experiences a sense of separation during their growth process. This article will explore the common problem faced by Generation Z in China, which is a sense of separation.

Part II:  The Dual Challenges Faced by China's Generation X

"China's Generation X has been pivotal in navigating the transition from traditional collective norms to modern individual pursuits, embodying the nation's broader societal transformations."

China’s Generation X

Generation X, born between 1965 and 1980 in China, is experiencing a tug of war between the collective and the individual. They seek a balance between traditional values and modern pursuits, facing social, economic, and personal growth considerations. This requires weighing different interests and values when making decisions and striving to find an appropriate balance point for themselves. Generation X, the generation of our parents, grew up during a crucial period of transition in Chinese society, from a closed to an open society and from a planned to a market economy. They witnessed significant societal changes and experienced firsthand the transformation of values. My mother lives in such a vast environment, shaping her personal experiences.

Part III: China's Generation X and Generation Z.

"Both Generation X and Generation Z in China are navigating the complex interplay between traditional collectivism and emerging individualism, each influenced by their unique social environments and historical contexts."

Generational Perspectives

In the first two parts, we learned about some common issues between Generation X and Generation Z, which are caused by their different social environments. The "sense of pull" of Generation X and the "sense of fragmentation" of Generation Z can indicate that their views on "individual" and "collective" are very different. Both generations are slowly accepting this lifestyle and making their own changes.
