My Design Philosophy

I am very glad to be a designer. Design is a multi-faceted course, integrating various subjects such as sociology, philosophy, etc., which makes the process of design a very interesting one, and my passion also comes from it. In the exploration of each project, I feel different cultural customs and cultures, which has become my favourite stage. The design process is like a journey, a pilgrimage, in which I accumulate strength and reach the temple in my heart at the end of the journey.

Generational understanding

This is based on the situation of the increasing work pressure of young people, through the classification of different generations and understanding the behavioral habits of different generations, the elderly can be accompanied and the young can be relaxed. It is also a "bond" that connects the community together.

Slider image

The concept of bond

From the concept of bond, many elements are derived, including DNA strand structure, topology structure, knot structure, series structure. The elements are abstracted into the most basic geometric form and utilized. The elements are transformed from abstract to concrete.

The extension of elements

Through the extension of the elements on the element board, many interesting forms can be obtained, and different elements are "defined" according to the needs of different groups, and elements are reinterpreted from both abstract and concrete perspectives. The design method of modularization is obtained, the community planning method is obtained

Design development

In this part, the three-dimensional space to be used in the design is developed based on the elements obtained from the transformation of two-dimensional graphics, and the body is analyzed based on the structure and operation methods (topological structure, Boolean operation method, modularity) obtained in two-dimensional.

Final Design Proposal

This community is clearly next to the next community, but it is cut off by a wall. Therefore, my design target is to take this community as the divergence point, radiate the surrounding communities in a planned way, break the "walls" in the community (physical walls and walls in people's minds)

General Views

It is hoped that the design can change the gap between generations , and at the same time, it is hoped that the community can become a place full of children's laughter. And through the organic architectural form, rich space, break the cold appearance of modern architecture, and awaken people

Design Narrative

Students theme  My design philosophy for the future is: to overlap Just like the appearance of coal ash, the story that happened on this land also overlaps layers and layers to form history, and it is because of history that there is the birth of the boiler room, and the appearance of anything is covered in the previous history. Overlap can also be said to be the interweaving of people of different ages in the same time and space, the time and space they are now in are overlapping, but the things they have experienced are completely different, when these people exist in a building, what kind of chemical reaction will be. In addition, the residents of the community are more Generation X, so they now have many overlapping identities, they are subordinates, parents, and children. How do they balance these identities? Can they find themselves in the architecture? To sum up, I think my building can be an "inclusive space", which gives people overlap in space, but brings spiritual inclusion and communication. The old can also find their own value in the dialogue with the young.

Honours Project - Site Research and Representation

Part I: Research and Analysis

The community I have chosen is the Provincial Inbeiyuan, located in Ruixiang Street, Baoding City, Hebei Province. The abandoned building is an exhaust boiler room in the community. This community is the provincial printing factory staff dormitory, residents are also mainly the employees of the year and their descendants. Proportion of personnel: 50 to 60 years old accounted for 50%; 40 to 50 years old accounted for 30%; Twenty percent are under 40. According to my observation, the most people at 19:00-21:30 in the evening. There are universities around the community, opposite the hospital, and around the address survey bureau.
1. The building shows signs of aging.
2. Small room aisle crowded, small number of places.
3. The community is very narrow, and the road between the building and the small house is only enough for a car to pass by, and the residents gathering downstairs to chat will cause congestion to the vehicles passing by the door of the unit.
4. Because it is an old-fashioned residential building, it is a six-story standard, no lift, so going up and down the stairs will be a great inconvenience for the elderly, people with inconvenient legs and feet, and the disabled.
5. The number of buildings is small and the occupancy rate is high.
6. Residents have a small range of activities, mostly around the community.
7. Old houses are not sound-proofed very well, so the noise of conversations downstairs will affect the lives of lower class residents.

Part II: Site Representation

Narrative:

The item I chose was the "coal ash" on the inside wall of the boiler room. Coal ash is produced by fine powders from the waste gas produced by burning coal over time that cling to walls in layers. It has a strong historical value. First of all, when I saw the coal ash at first sight, it gave me a feeling of splashing ink on the wall. I went to experiment on the reaction between coal ash and water, and found that it would dissolve in water well, but gradually lose its own characteristics, just like the residents living here, each of them has its own personality. However, in the process of getting older, he is subtly influenced by society and his children, and gradually covers his characteristics and becomes like an old man in the traditional sense. I did an experiment on burning coal. I found the overlapping covers formed solid coal ash.
Coal ash has accompanied a generation's life, provided warmth for the tireless workers of the printing plant, and has a strong historical value.
1. The soot on the walls, it takes time to build up.
2. The generation of coal ash is unique to the boiler room and can reflect the characteristics of the building.
3. Coal ash can bring back the memories of the old generation and pique the interest of the young.
4. Coal ash is caused by the continuous overlapping and covering of smoke in the development of time.
The concepts of overlap and time are the ones I most want to develop.
1. Coal ash is irregular and invisible in powder form.
2. The boiler is connected to the pipeline to function and produce coal ash, and is
connected to the pipeline. They are inseparable from each other, just like the connection between people.

Honours Project

Theoretical Underpinning

Part I: Generation Z and Cultural Identity in China

"Generation Z's misconceptions that cultural identity opposes modernity and globalization often lead them to struggle with maintaining cultural confidence in a rapidly globalizing world."

Navigating Modernity and Globalization

Summary of views: Generation Z has been seamlessly connected with the Internet information age since they were born. They attaches great importance to cultural identity. In the time and space enrichment brought about by globalization, it affects the cognition of the cultural identity of the people in the Z era. Some young people are excessively addicted to foreign culture, nor can they maintain cultural confidence.
Collage explanation: Part1 of the design revolves around Gen Z issues. Generation Z are more likely to be affected by other people's words or behaviors because they have received exam-oriented education and Internet since childhood. The whole design uses black as the background, representing that for Generation Z, the world is unknown. The torn paper in the middle of the image splits the whole into two parts, the top half representing the advantages of the era that Gen Z accept. The CD represents a colorful world made by technology, and the rocket expresses the upward motivation of Generation Z. The full of withered and rotten objects and colors, designed to express that any new thing is a double-edged sword. While enjoying the dividends of The Times, we should improve our ability to distinguish, and keep our cultural confidence.

Part II: Generation X and Social Identity in China

"Generation X's engagement in formalistic behaviours and their emphasis on social hierarchy are deeply rooted in the historical context of the Cultural Revolution and the subsequent period of economic reform and opening up in China."

Navigating Formalism and Hierarchy

Summary of views: Part2 points some Generation X will overemphasize the useless formalistic behavior because of the background information of the time. The Generation X who grew up in the Cultural Revolution of the last century, because of the excessive extremism of the time emphasis on form over substance. Generation X attaches great importance to social hierarchy, and they seize the opportunity of reform and opening up, accumulate more capital, and occupy a place in both business and official circles. As a result, they would start issuing "conformity tests," which gradually formed the formalism for Generation X.
Collage explanation:
Part2 the design as a whole is a tower gathered up with smoked cigarette butts, representing the corrupt drinking and table culture derived from formalism. The silver background surrounding the tower in the middle creates a seemingly luxurious environment, while the jagged edges indicate that all is not as it seems. Cigarette butts gathered outside, firmly stuck by glue, tilted a seemingly solid castle, in fact, are surface engineering, pull out one will collapse, revealing the nature of decay, glue formed a messy silk also represents the relationship in the wine and table culture. Essentially it means something that seems nice to do because of formalism, but is actually empty and has no connotation.

Part III: - Gen z and X Compare -The difference and analysis of identity between Generation Z and Generation X

"Generation Z's reliance on the Internet for social interaction contrasts sharply with Generation X's preference for direct, purposeful social engagements, highlighting a significant shift in socialization patterns across generations."

Generational Identities

Summary of views: Part3 expresses the difference of identity between Gen Z, X. Generation Z is more focused on online social networking. Gen Xers are more social in real life. Gen Z grew up with the Internet, they just want to "lie flat". They choose live alone, so they use the Internet to make their lives diverse. Gen X's socializing is mostly purposeful. They more inclined to participate in teamwork. They focuses on "identity socialization", the pursuit and recognition of success in the traditional sense.
Collage explanation:
I posed a question: Do you really show others who you really are? The design is divided into two parts, separated by mirrors. The mirror is to represent the barrier between network and reality; Mirror can most objectively let people understand the most real side of themselves. The part in front of the mirror represents the side that people show on the Internet, is bright and colorful, but is it really happy time? People often indulge in good illusions, looking in the mirror can make them wake up. The overall tone of the other side of the mirror is very dull, representing in private, many young people who are glamorous online are unsociable or even depressed. Many adults who appear to be successful people in reality have to make up for themselves. And the silk that swirls around them names a problem - isn't it a kind of self-entanglement?
