My Design Philosophy

I think good design is just like music, which makes us often unaware of its existence. It can take into account people's direct feelings about the building - comfort, security and familiarity. The design has the unique ability to build dignity. It can make people feel valued, respected and recognized. Therefore, my design concept emphasizes the harmonious and unified relationship of "people, architecture and environment". Environmental design forms a beautiful and comfortable environment for human activities. People are the theme and goal of my design. People's needs determine the direction of my design.

Architectural Inspiration

My architectural inspiration comes from breathing. The process of human respiration includes three interrelated links: external respiration, gas transport in the blood, and internal respiration. These three links are integrated into the design of pedestrian flow trends in the building. At this stage, it is basically established that the building is mainly divided into three parts.

The Zoning and function

At this stage, the main zoning and functions of the building have been established, and the interior and exterior correspond to each other. The first floor is responsible for the dynamic zone and transition. The main functions include foyer, front desk, water bar, mother and baby room, independent space, toilet, and sales. The middle layer is responsible for transition, and its main function is manual operation and reading channel. The second floor is responsible for the transition, painting, reading room, and small garden. The external space is a parking lot and a rest area.

Establishment of Old and New

At this stage, the combination of new and old was established as the main architectural technique. Break away from the original building exterior and combine new building materials with traditional red bricks. The swollen part in the middle represents breaking the bonds.

Development of modern architecture

The upward development of modern architecture has disrupted the relationships between neighbours. Therefore, this building is not only an interactive entertainment venue for individual families, but also a place for communication and entertainment between families. My architecture aims to enhance parent-child interaction and pay attention to the distance between people, especially children.

Final Design Scheme

Parent Child Interactive Bubble House

Firstly, considering the aging and sustainable development of buildings, abandoned factories will retain a portion of their original structure and bricks, combined with the design concept of "breathing", to break the original surface through flexible shapes and eliminate the rigid image of industry in the city. The exterior of the building is an outdoor children's playground. In the main design of the building, the original floor height is used to naturally divide the indoor space into three parts, from dynamic to static distribution. The design mainly focuses on parent-child interaction, while incorporating breathing elements to create a comfortable atmosphere.

General Views

The relationship between people is like a story of porcupines snuggling together to keep warm. If they are too far away, they cannot feel warmth, and if they are too close, they will be stabbed by each other. The interactive parent-child activity centre aims to remind parents to control the distance between parents and children through interactive space design.

Design Narrative

With the rapid development of the economy, China inevitably experiences cultural lag and social anomie, which hinders the healthy and coordinated development of society. Unlike families in the stable social backgrounds of the past, families now need to evolve new models and cultures to cope with and adapt to the new impacts of social change in a rapidly changing social background. Various factors have contributed to ineffective communication and other issues between parents and children, resulting in conflicts and discord that affect the physical and mental development as well as the learning enthusiasm of teenagers, while also impacting the emotions and work of parents. My DD3000 question focuses on the application of interactive design in parent-child spaces and explores the impact of interactive design on parent-child communication. My project aims to provide a bridge for communication and interaction between parents and children, offering opportunities to enhance parent-child relationships. Interactive spaces have the potential to facilitate communication between parents and children, inspiring people. Good parent-child interaction plays a role in enhancing emotional communication, stimulating inner potential, and promoting healthy physical and mental growth.

Honours Project - Site Research and Representation

Part I: Research and Analysis

The location is in Shijiazhuang City, Hebei Province, China. Shijiazhuang is an important transportation hub in Hebei and even in China. The development of heavy industry is prominent, with equipment manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, steel, building materials, food industry, and textile industry as its economic pillars. The abandoned workshop is in an electronics factory - 850 Electronics Factory. Its predecessor was a national defence tertiary military enterprise founded in 1966. In 2007, it merged with several factories in Shijiazhuang. In recent years, due to urban planning and other reasons, factories have been relocated. With the development of the economy, the pressure on environmental governance is increasing year by year. Meanwhile, with the construction of the railway, the population of Shijiazhuang has gradually increased, with a rapid population growth rate and a significant mechanical growth rate. There is a significant age difference in the construction of surrounding residential buildings. Shijiazhuang has made great efforts to develop the education industry, and the average number of years of education has reached its peak. Many schools are located around my site. The main reason is that my location is surrounded by residential areas. Shijiazhuang has a temperate monsoon climate. The four seasons are distinct, and the winter and summer are distinct. The rainfall is concentrated in summer and autumn, and the precipitation in spring is less.

Part II: Site Representation

Red brick, also called clay brick, is made of clay, shale, coal gangue, and other raw materials. Red brick not only has certain strength and durability but also has certain advantages of thermal insulation and sound insulation due to its porosity. Therefore, it can be used as a wall material, as well as for masonry column, arch, chimney, ground, and foundation. Old buildings often use it as a building material. There are red bricks on the roofs and walls of many classical buildings in Europe. However, due to the huge environmental pollution caused by firing red bricks, China began to restrict the use of red bricks in 2005 and banned their use in 2012. The surface of red brick has a rough, special texture. After being broken and restructured, it has an accidental aesthetic feeling. The reason why the red brick is red is that the iron element in the brick is oxidised into iron oxide. Special colours and textures can provide inspiration for design. Summary: Because red brick has the characteristics of high compressive strength and low tensile strength, I summarised the deformation of the red brick after wear, which can become the surface of the building. There are many ways to arrange red bricks, which have an ornamental effect. It can be used for the design of buildings.

Theoretical Underpinning

Part I: Generation Z and Self Identification

'The Internet has provided more and more social channels for people, but interpersonal relationships seem to be increasingly estranged. We are increasingly reluctant to approach others......'

The social dilemma of generations

The blue web represents the rise of the internet, and two different colors of paper represent the differences between two generations. White bricks represent communication, connecting two generations together. Flowers represent hope. Anyone born between 1981 and 1996 (ages 26 to 41 in 2022) is considered a Millennial, and anyone born from 1997 onward is part of a new generation.(2019) Members of Generation Z were born in the post foam era of the Internet and the era of rapid development of the Internet (Fang Zhong, 2021). The Internet has provided more and more social channels for people, but interpersonal relationships seem to be increasingly estranged. We are increasingly reluctant to approach others and invite them into our lives. Social networks accelerate the flow of information, but never change the nature of communication between people. Maybe we can encourage more people to participate in offline social activities through art and architecture.

Part II:  Pre-generation Z and Self Identification

'...anti structuralism abandons the existing logic and seeks formal equality by breaking the existing social structure. Social fragmentation, social unrest and hatred....'

Generation X and Generation Y from the perspective of film

The broken mirror represents the reflection on the social problems in the industrial society, and the burnt brown represents the sharp social contradictions that have made people pay a heavy price. The newspaper with the words "National Peace and People's Security" missing from the bottom represents people's expectations. In movies released around 1990, sociality and grandeur shifted towards personal narratives that were closer to people's lives. This anti structuralism abandons the existing logic and seeks formal equality by breaking the existing social structure. Social fragmentation, social unrest and hatred in the industrial society have reshaped the isolation between various groups in today's society. Under the friction and confrontation of society, group psychology gradually goes to extremes. Oppose authority, oppose the worship of reason, oppose narrow thinking of binary opposition, embrace ubiquitous differences with a diverse and open mindset.

Part III: Generations and Community

'.... poor parent-child relationships are an important cause of behavioral disorders, suicides, and criminal tendencies in children.... family gatherings and parent-child activities can help improve the relationship...'

Parent child relationship of Generation Z and Generation Y

A straight line represents communication. The wrinkled and burned colored plastic represents the wounds left by the intense conflict between parents and children in their hearts. Broken white cardboard represents sharp parent-child issues and children's resistance to parental authority. . The colored coil represents good communication between parents and children. Parents and children are unable to interact with each other and experience the same physical experience, which leads to problems in the relationship between parents and children. A good parent-child relationship is beneficial for children's mental health and personality development. . On the contrary, poor parent-child relationships are an important cause of behavioral disorders, suicides, and criminal tendencies in children. Regular family gatherings and parent-child activities can help improve the relationship between parents and children.
