My Design Philosophy

As a designer, I hope to bring convenience to the world through my work. By solving problems in society, I strive to maintain a balance between art and science, and to explore the interaction between emotion and reason. I believe that critical thinking is crucial and should always be applied. I also insist on self-reflection, constantly evaluating my own beliefs and actions. Ultimately, my goal is to create a sense of belonging for individuals and society, building a home for both.

Community focus

Site issues: With the development of The Times, environmental sustainability and economic sustainability need to be coordinated. The original winery is no longer suitable for today's urban environment and needs to be relocated to the suburbs to protect the environment. The ethos and practices of the winery are also consistent with the concept of sustainability. That's why it continues today. But after the relocation of the old site, those abandoned warehouses need to play its architectural value again. Community's problems: Middle-aged and elderly people lack communication partners, there is a certain sense of loneliness, they long for entertainment and rest space. Young people have great demand for social entertainment, and there is no space for public communication and entertainment around the site.

Breaking

Breaking: Recycle broken glass or beer bottles Convergence: After investigation, these waste glass fragments can be put into moulds for hot melt cooling, and made into glass bricks of different colours, so as to realize the recycling of materials. Beauty and utility coexist.

The fusion of new materials

â‘  The fusion of new materials and old materials (the combination of earthenware and glass bricks) â‘¡ The sense of flow in the wine cup (breaking the monotonous curve of the original factory roof, using new materials to cast a more flowing and modern curved roof)

Further design

By taking inspiration from the fluidity of the wine, we created a fusion of the top and wall made of fiberglass concrete, and used more curves to make the whole look very fluid.

Final Design Scheme

Baoding winery is transformed into a multi-functional cultural and commercial space

Social issue: There is a communication gap between young people (Age:18-25) and middle-aged and elderly people (Age:40-55), and they desire more public space to meet their different needs. The combination of memory and architecture is based on culture and commerce. The abandoned winery will be endowed with new meaning and vitality. The wine culture background of the site will be used to explore new business models and create new lifestyles. Combined with the needs of different people in the surrounding communities, the wine culture will be used as the medium to extend the dynamic commercial space with common and individual characteristics, so that the two groups of people will be aware of the existing problems. Create a sustainable development vision where different people interact with each other.

Final Design Proposal

Breaking boundaries & creating convergence "Break down the barriers between people and create a place of integration."

General Views

Through "multi-business, multi-scene, multi-function". Integrated office, wine culture experience, music bar to make a variety of space changes. It breaks the boundary of the population with time and space and realizes the sustainable development of community life.

Community Project - Participant’s Installation

Design Narrative

Sustainable communities are those that meet the diverse needs of current and future residents, contribute to a high quality of life, and provide more opportunities and choices. They achieve this by using natural resources efficiently, improving the environment, promoting social cohesion and inclusion, and enhancing economic prosperity. Through a series of case analyses, I have gained a lot of inspiration for future design methods. Practical techniques: The hardware includes a large-screen display screen, somatosensory interaction software, and three-dimensional digital content. These elements are used to simulate the movements of participants standing in front of the large screen through the sensing device. Somatosensory recognition technology is employed to project the screen and enable multi-person large-screen interaction. In accordance with the venue's space, a double-sided display screen is installed in a specific area. For instance, suppose two customers stand on opposite sides of the screen. They can interact with the person displayed on the screen using the aforementioned technology, even when they cannot physically see each other. This interactive and social approach is novel, interesting, visually appealing, and technologically advanced. It captivates the crowd and leaves them with positive memories of the space while fostering interaction and communication.

Honours Project - Site Research and Representation

Part I: Research and Analysis

Baoding Winery is located in Lianchi District, Baoding City, Hebei Province. It is the core area of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei synergy and has gradually developed into an important node between Beijing and Xiong. At the same time, Lianchi District is also the area with the largest population in Baoding. There are 10 communities around it, with complete medical facilities, surrounded by universities, primary schools, and middle schools. Baoding Military Academy Plaza covers the business circle with a large number of people and lacks some entertainment and catering industries. Baoding winery is located at the intersection of Dongfeng East Road and Hongqi Street, surrounded by a well-developed road network and convenient transportation. The nearby university, business district, and many residential areas have considerable population flow. With the development of the times, environmental sustainability and economic sustainability need to be coordinated together. The original winery is no longer suited to today's urban environment, so the winery was relocated in 2021 and the old site is now privately owned. It is understood that the factory owners hope that the old plant here can produce some economic benefits, but there are no plans at present. Upon entering the factory, you will see a prominent sign that reads "Baoding Winery 1945-2045, only 24 years away from the centennial." It was founded in 1945 and has a history of 72 years. It can be said that the development history of Baoding Brewery has witnessed the development of the city and the country. It is necessary to pay attention to the supply of lighting to make up for the lack of natural lighting. Although the iron roof is easy to install and difficult to fix with a steel frame, it will slowly rust over time. There are certain problems in waterproofing, fire prevention, wind resistance, and so on, which need to be prevented by some special coatings. The original brick wall structure is unstable. Although the outer surface is treated with cement patch, it still has a damp phenomenon after a long time. In addition, it is necessary to strengthen it again, do a good job in thermal insulation, waterproofing, moisture-proofing, sound insulation, and other issues.

Part II: Site Representation

I extended and drew a lot of inspiration from the design object of the winery, the "wine glass". By recycling old broken glass into the specified mold after high-temperature hot melting, I will get a very beautiful building decoration material - "glass brick". This phenomenon of breaking and restructuring gives me more inspiration and ideas for the design of the winery. Through my design, I hope to make this building become a place that breaks down the boundaries and barriers between people, allowing them to mingle here. While the "wine cup" carries the wine culture, I want to use it as a medium to combine the crowd with the crowd, the building with the environment, and use more curves, flow feeling, glass bricks and the original earth ceramic bricks of the site to fully integrate my concept into the building. Combined with the background of the site, we are trying to solve the needs and living problems of the surrounding communities. The abandoned winery will be given new meaning and vitality, combined with its wine culture background, exploring a diversified, multi-scenario, multi-functional business model, and creating a new way of life. With wine culture as the medium, the multi-functional dynamic commercial space with common and individual characteristics is expanded, and the diversified functional space interacts with people to make the two types of people aware of problems and promote better communication and interaction between community people. While enhancing regional economic development, it creates a sustainable hub for the living and communication of the surrounding communities.

Honours Project

Theoretical Underpinning

Part I: Generation Z and Self Identification

'we often accept the status quo with a desire, hoping that the two generations can follow the pace of The Times, understand each other and understand each other from different perspectives with critical thinking.'

Generational differences

It is true that there are great differences between the two generations in terms of age and social environment, and some concepts cannot be completely solved. Objectively speaking, it is unrealistic for people of the two generations to understand each other, but there are still various ways for them to reach a brief consensus, after all, they will still live together now. Therefore, we often accept the status quo with a desire, hoping that the two generations can follow the pace of The Times, understand each other and understand each other from different perspectives with critical thinking. This is the vision of Generation Z, and these problems and characteristics are also the reflection of the identity of the Generation Z. MODEL CONCEPT: I want to express the social phenomenon that Generation 2 people are not understood and lack of respect and listening due to different times. I hope to express the vision that only with mutual respect and understanding can families become more harmonious and the world become more beautiful through this art installation.

Part II:  Pre-generation Z and Self Identification

'Design is an art to make life better, which is further illustrated by the emergence of universal design. Its design concept is that everyone can use it, and it has high flexibility and adjustment.'

Generational influence on the world

Design is an art to make life better, which is further illustrated by the emergence of universal design. Its design concept is that everyone can use it, and it has high flexibility and adjustment. It is intuitive and effective in terms of space control and convenient use. Through the influence and analysis of the baby boomers. I hope that no matter what kind of generation the world creates and how generations influence the world, we are using various ways to break the chains and barriers of generations and build a better world. MODEL CONCEPT: My art installation is a three-dimensional collage made of plastic soil. The picture is a trend of diagonal cubes with rotating angles gradually converging to the center. What I'm trying to say Through the influence and analysis of the baby boomers, I hope that no matter what kind of generation the world creates and how generations influence the world, we are using various ways to break the chains and barriers of generations and build a better world.

Part III: Generations and Community

'...breaks the boundary of people with time and space, realizes the sustainable development of community communication, improves the cohesion and inclusiveness of community to community....'

Breaking boundaries creating convergence

As a designer, I want to be "multi-format, multi-scene, high quality". Multi-functional space integrating office, bar and wine culture experience. It breaks the boundary of people with time and space, realizes the sustainable development of community communication, improves the cohesion and inclusiveness of community to community, and promotes the sustainable development of regional economy. MODEL CONCEPT: This installation is composed of Lego blocks and wood. The regular shapes of Lego blocks represent the thoughts of the elders, while various wood blocks represent the younger generation. I fuse them together through collage, which means that I hope they can communicate with each other and integrate into each other to break the barriers.
