  • Fully utilize the site resources of abandoned buildings to meet the needs of women before and after childbirth in the new social development.

  • Considering the feasibility and limitations of the community, the structural support of buildings should be extensively demolished or renovated.

  • Consider crowd flow routes and functional zoning

  • Consider objective lighting issues

Generational understanding

The original building used a straight in and straight out approach, with all entrances and exits in one direction, and the exits consistently facing outward. For women during pregnancy and childbirth, they lack a sense of security, and this way of entry and exit makes them feel that their privacy is not protected.

Slider image

The concept of bond

The original architectural structure was single and uninteresting in form. A long rectangular building without any ups and downs, appearing stiff and cold.

Slider image

The extension of elements

I want to adopt the form of a courtyard house because the original building had a straight entrance and exit, which made pregnant women emotionally sensitive and lacked a sense of security.

Design development

Different arrangements can create a privacy preserving atmosphere by creating different blocks to distinguish different partitions and exerting their effects through various shapes and expressions. Create positive emotions for pregnant and postpartum women as much as possible

Final Design Scheme

Medical Sustainable Utilization of Abandoned Warehouses

Summarize and implement the full utilization of abandoned building site resources, meet new social needs, and address the needs of women before and after childbirth. Transforming abandoned hospital warehouses into sustainable medical service centres meets the growing demand of society.

Final Design Proposal

I want to adopt the form of a courtyard house because the original building had a straight entrance and exit, which made pregnant women emotionally sensitive. Create an atmosphere of privacy protection. Create different blocks to distinguish different partitions and utilize them through various shapes and expressions. Create positive emotions for pregnant and postpartum women as much as possible.

General Views

The terrace faces the main entrance, and in the hospital backyard, many people will enter. Through this entrance. So we can distinguish the people whose traffic comes from this place. This entrance is located outside the maternity yoga room, and a safety line can be added. The height of each building and the height and thickness of its components are interconnected because I want to combine buildings of different shapes and need to use elements of the same height and thickness to connect them together

Video Portfolio

Many entrances and exits have been added and improved The entrance and exit of primitive one-way hermit buildings. The selected area that can be directly accessed from the back door of the hospital adds convenience. Set up a medical guidance desk at the original entrance and exit. On the one hand, guiding the route of abortion, and on the other hand, pregnant and postpartum women. The safety of increased activity space for pregnant and postpartum women.

Context, Site analysis, Design Narratives and Concept

Community Project - Participant’s Installation

Design Narrative

Students theme  Starting from a single root, two different branches with different perspectives (connecting the previous tree root spread) are dispersed, namely advocating for fertility and rejecting fertility. Future life projects can be represented through both visual and auditory aspects. In terms of visual aspects, some photo installations can be made. For example, in the branch advocating for not having children, some photos of women's body deformation and experiencing pain after childbirth can be placed, as well as pictures of physical changes caused by postpartum depression. In advocating for having children, some scenes of intimacy and happiness between mother and son can be displayed. In terms of sound, one branch is the sound of babies crying and mothers crying and giving birth, while the other branch is the joyful laughter and interaction between mother and child. Form a contrast.

Honours Project - Site Research and Representation

Part I: Research and Analysis

Shuozhou Dongfang Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital Backyard, Shuozhou City, Shanxi Province
Why choose this place: This place can be freely modified and opened up, bringing service and convenience to surrounding facilities and communities. I have lived near here since I was young, and I am very familiar with the surrounding area and its needs. Although this is a private area of the hospital, I am allowed to make any modifications Surrounding communities: District government, government family buildings, ancient city walls, schools, convenience stores, small squares (some far away), maternal and child health centres (vaccinated). The connection with the surrounding environment: located in the middle of the entire street and community, surrounded by the surrounding facilities mentioned above. Established from 2008 to 2009
What was originally done: It was originally a warehouse established simultaneously with the hospital to store medical equipment, medicines, kitchen ingredients, and other items.
Why it was abandoned: Because both sides are taller buildings with limited daily sunlight, the environment is relatively humid and cannot store medicine, equipment, and other items, so it was abandoned. (Sunlight hours: 10:00-12:00, 15:00-17:30) Now all the debris inside is unused and unused. Why is the hospital established here? Because this is the city centre, and the district government is also here, there is a large flow of people, and many people have to pass through here. The hospital was established from 2008 to 2009
Background:
(Why is it a gynaecological hospital): Because Shanxi is not far from Beijing, people with diseases such as urology, dermatology, and other diseases mostly choose to go to large hospitals in Beijing. For women with gynaecological diseases such as childbirth, postpartum care, and postpartum care, they will choose hospitals nearby because family members need to take care of them every day for childbirth and gynaecology, so they will go to the nearest hospital. There is a maternal and child health hospital nearby, which makes it convenient for postpartum babies to get vaccinated.

Part II: Site Representation

Narrative:

My personal belongings are peeling walls.
1. It is related to the business of obstetrics and gynaecology hospitals and can receive consultations. A baby is born from the mother's body and becomes a new life form, which is the process of separating a part of one body into another. This separation state is similar to peeling off walls.
During pregnancy, the cracks on the wall under the pineapple may be related to the stretch marks on the mother's abdomen. The pattern that erupts from a single point and spreads in all directions, as well as the cracks that appear when the wall is peeled off, are also cracks that occur when a wall is peeled off. It starts from a point and slowly spreads.

Honours Project

Theoretical Underpinning

Part I: The impact of community relationships and values shaped by technological development on the self-identity of Generation Z

'...the Z generation has evolved from selfishness to a degree that can be called selfishness, and selfishness has become the mainstream.....'

Consumption

In this era of development, the values we derive will be vastly different from before. As the consumption level and people's values develop in each era, subjective concepts in people's hearts will subtly change. In the current era of development, The people of the Z generation are no longer confined to being defined, no longer catering to the opinions and preferences of others, and will not make themselves low-profile individuals who cater to others.

The reason why this group can develop is that the Z generation has evolved from selfishness to a degree that can be called selfishness, and selfishness has become the mainstream of the post-Z generation. This will give rise to the rapid development of the Z era, The values of Generation Z are greatly influenced by the social relationships shaped by economic development and technology, and the wealth gap created by the development of the times has also caused significant differences in the self-identity of self-satisfied individuals in this era.

Part II: The traditional concepts and reproductive views influenced by the personal value pursuit of Generation Y

'....represents that Generation Y is not bound by traditional concepts, and pink has a vibrant feeling of new ideas.

The personal value pursuit of Generation Y

The second part represents a comparison of positive and negative views on female fertility, as well as a contrast between traditional concepts and the new ideas of Generation Y. Its overall colour tone is pink and black, with a relatively pure pink white side representing the female uterus. For young women who have not experienced childbirth, it is the left half, representing those who have not been harmed by childbirth. The left half is relatively healthy. It also represents that Generation Y is not bound by traditional concepts, and pink has a vibrant feeling of new ideas. However, the black colour on the right side represents the fragility and harm of the uterus after childbirth, while being trapped by an iron ring represents the meaning that Generation Y may be trapped in a cage that revolves around their children for a lifetime after having children. The meaning of pearls represents purity, brightness, new life, and new ideas. The withered flower on the right represents a woman who is giving birth.
Originally, it was also like a flower, but after giving birth, they may gradually become withered, exhausted, and lethargic after experiencing tiredness and pain. It also represents that old traditional concepts are slowly being changed in the progress of the times and the progress of ideas, gradually leading to the disappearance of some feudal and not-so-good concepts.

Part III: Compare the differences and similarities between Generation Z and Generation Y in various aspects, as well as the influence of previous generations.

'Our ideas and concepts, such as values, fertility, and personal views, are gradually pushed to the highest point as the foundation accumulates..'

Two lines that can “never” be intersect

The third part aims to express that Generation Z and Generation Y are slowly moving towards a better direction of development in the face of social changes and intellectual progress. The green space at the bottom represents the foundation, which can be understood as the foundation of the ideas and concepts of previous generations. The stacked roses represent the changes that have occurred in previous generations such as the Baby Boomers and Generation X, as well as their ideologies and policies. They gather towards a point, slowly pile up, and gradually progress, which is a process of accumulation, progress, and change. The thick ladder represents the progress of our future generations on the foundation laid by our predecessors and also represents the progress of society step by step.
Our ideas and concepts, such as values, fertility, and personal views, are gradually pushed to the highest point as the foundation accumulates. Technology and the economy are also on the upward ladder, getting closer and closer to the ideal light. The top lamp represents a bright future, and the circle corresponds to the sphere on the foundation. Although all aspects are improving, it does not replace all the traditions and concepts of the past, but rather summarizes and retains some of the content of previous generations. Pearls can represent people, both on the foundation and on the steps. They represent people who move up from the experience of their predecessors and ultimately reach the top (the pearl on the top step). Let Generation Z become the latest and currently the highest generation driven by their predecessors.
