My Design Philosophy

My values is that more traditional cultural treasures need to be inherited and innovated with our hearts, and we should oppose stereotyped and groundless innovations. Culture needs to be rinsed carefully to take root in the soil and absorb nutrients to bloom fragrant flowers. While we protect culture, we also retain our hearts.

Building analysis

The building is divided into three floors, which are the three main functional areas. First floor free creative area. Here are some artists' exhibitions to let children understand the artist's design ideas, carry out DIY free creation. The second layer of hand drawn area. Let children choose their favorite painting tools for creation. The third floor is also a handicraft area. The difference is that there is manual classification.

Building evaluation

The overall building is a square cuboid with a cylindrical hollow in the middle. Dive into a large rotating staircase. The overall building is divided into three levels, excluding the hollow design at the bottom. Walking up from the bottom of the stairs, you can see the layout design of the three level space in a circular manner. The use of positive and negative techniques and spatial structure optimization design functions balance the relationship between privacy and publicity of the entire space

Diverse and layered architectural appearance.

Use sun panels on both sides of the façade. The main materials are aluminium sheets, glass, and steel frame structures. To create a more diverse and layered architectural appearance. The building is supported by multiple columns, and special parts such as arcs and curves are used to create a smoother and more three-dimensional architectural form. This project utilizes modern design techniques and materials to generate renewable energy from solar energy, achieving the highest level of sustainable development.

Creating a space for children's art creation,

The overall design revolves around creating a space for children's art creation, hoping to create an ideal place for children with the concept of "creating dreams". We hope to follow the principle of combining movement and stillness during the exchange of creation and entertainment, so that children can experience children's fun.

Final Design Scheme

Dream Garden

For children whose rationality and logic are not yet mature, the body becomes a link between their inner life and outer life. Through the influence of the surrounding environment and society, through the creation of children's art workshops, children can understand the outer world. Design concept "Dream Garden". The design concept is to allow children to create whatever they like in their own world, no matter what. Through children's artistic creation, children can improvise in such an atmosphere, let them experience the "whole life" of art, and realize a valuable and unique art workshop.

Key focuses of the project

General Views

The whole design revolves around the space for children's art creation. The landscape activity area is divided into three areas: the first part is the simple amusement facilities area, where there are children's favourite game slides, climbing mountains, drilling games and treasure hunting beach. The second part is open space, sunny lawn, green heart roundabout, secret flower gallery and ecological observation, which serves as a central square for leisure and communication, allowing children to experience nature. The third part is an environmental protection stage, combining with the water system to create an integrated small stage space, exhibition space and auditorium.

Community Project - Participant’s Installation

Design Narrative

The installation art is a concept derived from future design. The future design aims to create an art workshop primarily for children. I use multiple sticks to construct polygonal modules and hang the handmade creations by children on them, forming a transparent exhibition. Every detail is designed and assembled by the children themselves. My intention is for children to transform their dreams into visible scenery and create their own artworks in this space. The device is composed of several wooden sticks, forming a hollow structure. Above it, the handmade creations by children are suspended using thin iron wire. The art installation measures 17.5cm in height and approximately 20.5cm in length and width. My final design is an open art exhibition space. Whether people enter this open space or observe it from the outside, they can admire the handicrafts made by children. This allows people to experience the joy of children and witness their vibrant ideas.

Honours Project - Site Research and Representation

Part I: Research and Analysis

The abandoned distillery holds numerous stories and memories of the city. Each bottle within it represents a part of the city's history, and despite the deteriorating buildings, it still emanates a strong sense of historical significance. Hebei Baoding Wine Co., Ltd., a winery, is situated at No. 390 Dongfeng East Road, Baoding City, Hebei Province. It was established in 1945 and boasts a 70-year history. The winery is located within the urban plant of the Baoding Real Estate Wine Factory. The total length of the winery measures 51.43 meters, and the entire site is constructed using red bricks. The area spans 500 square meters. Originally abandoned as part of the state's renovation efforts for old industrial structures, the distillery has been well-preserved and still retains several production facilities alongside the main building. Analyzing the winery's surroundings reveals that the majority of nearby residential areas house a significant number of children, likely influenced by the national policy supporting families with three children. Given the winery's historical and cultural significance, as a renowned old building, it carries the rich historical context of Baoding's wine culture. Therefore, it plays a crucial role in promoting the winery's reconstruction. For children, whose reasoning and logic have not yet fully developed, the physical body becomes the bridge between their inner and outer worlds.

Part II: Site Representation

With the passage of time, many buildings have undergone gradual transformations into modern designs. However, in certain corners of the city, there are still architectural ruins that remain due to human damage, natural disasters, or long-term neglect. One such example is an abandoned distillery located at No. 390 Dongfeng East Road, Baoding City, Hebei Province, which has been repurposed into an art workshop. The primary objective of this workshop is to fully nurture and develop the intellectual, emotional, social, physical, artistic, creative, and spiritual potential of each child. The art workshop is designed with multidimensional spaces. Different forms of art are taught in the workshop, allowing children to engage in DIY activities, and there is also a designated area for the display of artistic creations. The aim is to transform the building into more than just an abandoned and useless ruin, but to infuse it with artistic value. The overall design prominently features glass, and at the center is a hollowed-out structure housing a large rotating colored staircase, symbolizing a slide for the children.

Theoretical Underpinning

Part I: Generation Z and Self Identification

'They have been seamlessly connected with the Internet information age since their birth, and are greatly influenced by digital information technology, instant messaging devices and smart phone products.'

The net born generation

Generation Z, also known as "net born generation", "Internet generation", "quadratic generation" and "digital media natives", usually refers to the generation born between 1995 and 2009. They have been seamlessly connected with the Internet information age since their birth, and are greatly influenced by digital information technology, instant messaging devices and smart phone products. "Generation Z" is a large group of young people, but also the most promising group, will play an irreplaceable role in the future, is a new force for China's future development. It is of great significance to China and the world to cultivate open, scientific and critical thinking and establish the concept that science and technology serve the people. The young consumer group represented by Generation Z is rising strongly and will have a multi-dimensional impact on the entire Internet consumption. As their consumption view is more individual, showing multiple characteristics such as priority of interest, emphasis on experience and rational consumption, consumption is not only to meet their needs, but also to pursue a way of life.

Part II:  Pre-generation Z and Self Identification

'Generation Y has more access to the outside world through the Internet, but instead of being overwhelmed by confusing information, they are far better at telling right from wrong than their predecessors.'

Generation Y, a out of step with The Times

Generation Y is a generation name in the United States. In the range of Generation Y, there are sometimes several synonyms to describe the generation characteristics of this period. The term Generation Y is widely recognized as the last generation of Americans in the 20th century, born and raised into young adulthood, and the year 2000 has passed. Generation Y usually refers to a group of young adults born between 1980 and the late 1990s who grew up today. Most of them are confident, persistent, frank, opinionated and well-informed. Generation Y has more access to the outside world through the Internet, but instead of being overwhelmed by confusing information, they are far better at telling right from wrong than their predecessors. By conventional standards, Generation Y is out of step with The Times. In business terms, the impact and potential of Generation Y is incalculable. "Generation Y", they have clear requirements for products, such as fashion, taste, personality, novelty and grade, and businesses are more willing to launch special products for this specific group.

Part III: Generations and Community

'The most significant difference between Generation Z and the Baby Boomers is the difference in communication, creating a generational gap that is difficult to bridge.'

The two Generations: different ideas, different habits, different consumption.

1. Different ideas. Generation Y, also known as Millennials, refers to people born between 1980 and 1995. The biggest characteristic of Generation Y is that they have experienced the rapid popularization of personal computers and the Internet, so most of them are confident, optimistic, persistent, frank, independent and knowledgeable. Generation Z refers to those born between 1995 and 2010. 2. Different habits. Millennials have witnessed the rapid development of the Internet, while Generation Z refers to those born between the mid-1990s and before 2010. Compared with millennials, the legendary post-1995 generation, Generation z is also known as the Internet generation. In other words, millennials are good at using the Internet, while Generation Z is used to using the Internet. 3. Different consumption In terms of consumption, Generation Y is still the main force of consumption, and Generation Z has growth potential. The former have entered the workforce and have stable earning power. The latter are also slowly entering the workforce but their earnings are not yet stable and they have great potential for growth.
